Water polo round up: Del Oro boys, Woodcreek girls win section championships

It was section championship weekend in the Sac-Joaquin Section and local high schools were well-represented in both the boys' and girls' finals. Four teams made it to their respective championship matches: Granite Bay girls in Division I and the Del Oro boys, along with both Woodcreek's boys and girls in Division II. Granite Bay High fell to Davis 13-7 in Saturday's D-I final at the Roseville Aquatic Center, as the Blue Devils jumped out to an early 4-1 lead after the first quarter and never waivered. Davis High was led by junior Malaya Wright's four goals and six assists in the contest. The win was Davis' sixth section championship in a row. Despite the loss, the Grizzlies still qualified for the NorCal Regional Tournament, earning the sixth-seed in Division II. Granite Bay High drew No. 3 Los Gatos High in the opening round and the two squads were tied 4-4 at halftime but the Wildcats claimed a 6-5 advantage after the third. Los Gatos High slammed the door on the Grizzlies with a 4-0 fourth quarter to take the match 10-5. Woodcreek High's girls claimed the first section title in program history, defeating Atwater-Buhach Colony 14-5 in the D-III championship at the Roseville Aquatic Center on Saturday. The victory gave the Timberwolves the top seed in the Division III NorCal Regional bracket. In Tuesday's match, Woodcreek High dominated with a 17-5 victory over No. 8 Christian Brothers High to advance to the semifinals. The Timberwolves are in search of their ninth consecutive win on Thursday after press time when they host No. 4 San Jose-Leigh in the semifinals. The winner of Thursday's semifinal will play against either No. 2 Pebble Beach-Stevenson or No. 3 Walnut Creek-Northgate in the NorCal final on Saturday. The Del Oro boys won their first section championship in program history as well, defeating Woodcreek 13-11 in Saturday's Division II championship. The Golden Eagles were led by senior Cayden Pitzer's seven goals on nine shots, as well as two goals each from Luke Raby and Justin Learn. Junior Bode Farren earned the win in the net with seven saves in the contest. Del Oro High earned the seventh seed in Division II in the NorCal Regional but fell to No. 2 Moraga-Campolindo on Tuesday 12-6. Woodcreek was the fifth seed in D-III NorCals. The Timberwolves fell at No. 4 San Rafael-Terra Linda 11-7 Tuesday.
