10 Years Ago Nov. 29, 2012 Sierra College football coach Jeff Tisdel is stepping down after a 34-year coaching career. His record at Sierra College is 84-37, including six conference championship teams and eight bowl appearances. "I had a vision for the program when I got here in 2000 and I think we've accomplished it," Tisdel said. "The Nutcracker" opens at Placer High School. Local participants include Amelie Morrow, John Watkins, Svea North, Madison Watkins and Meghan Watkins. There is an increase in mail thefts from roadside and cluster boxes. Participating in the MandaRun include Michelle Ferreira, Becky Pahl, Michelle Guardino, Heather Hilton, Angie and Jessica Alva, DJ Martinez, Victor and Olivia Estevez, and Jaida Dossman. Colin Murphy, 7 braved the rainy weather while watching the Day Before Thanksgiving Parade in downtown Loomis. Zoe Andersen, 15, of Roseville was also not fazed by the rain as she marched with the Dance Gallery 2 group. The Del Oro High School team placed 12th in the California Interscholastic Federation's State Cross Country Championship Meet in Fresno. The runners are Megan Gentes, Lizzie Meredith, Amy Heyn, Maddy Lyons, Dominique Tristant, Maddy Montgomery and Libby Runte. Aaron Rice of Penryn earned the rank of Eagle Scout as a member of Troop 121. His Eagle project was rebuilding damaged burrowing owl nests at the Placer Land Trust located north of Lincoln. Nine local elementary students became cowboy and cowgirl poets while performing during the Cowpoke Fall Gathering in Loomis. The young poets were Addie Mathias, Claire Malloy, Taylor Herron, Luke Shearer, Brody Locke, Gabby Hammel, Amy Ung, Sarah Sparks and Sarah Vargas. Two Del Oro High School basketball players signing letters of intent are Brianna Ruiz for University of Washington and Stephanie Geyer for U.S. Military Academy. Alex Ferreira of Lincoln is the recipient of the Placer Land Trust's Conservator Award. His father, Domingues, was a farmer who came from Portugal. The family moved to a ranch on Wise Road in 1930, right at the Depression. They farmed plums, peaches, and pears. After surviving Okinawa and the Philippines in the infantry during World War II, Ferreira bought an 80-acre ranch, also on Wise Road. "I raised dairy and beef cows. I started a winery, the only Placer County winery at the time," Ferreira said. "I bought the grapes from the Riolos and produced burgundy and zinfandel under the Ferreira brand." 25 Years Ago Dec. 4, 1997 Ensign Joseph Pope, a 1992 Del Oro High School graduate, earned his commission as a Naval officer by completing Officer Candidate School. Marine Lance Cpl. Phillip Bryan, son of Catherine Pepper of Rocklin, is serving with Marine Medium Helicopter squadron 1963 at El Toto in Santa Ana. He was recently promoted, based on his superior performance. Navy 3rd Class Petty Officer Joseph Mennim, son of John Mennim of Rocklin, completed the Basic Aviation Ordnance Course at Pensacola, Florida. Marine Pfc. David Schuermann, son of retired Air Force Major and Mrs. Robert Schuermann and a 1993 Del Oro graduate, was recently deployed to the Western Pacific with the Marine Expeditionary Unit. Navy Seaman Steven Cunningham, son of Mary Cunningham of Loomis, is serving aboard the aircraft carrier USS George Washington deployed to the Mediterranean Sea. The Del Oro High football team defeated Galt High 48-19 to earn a trip to the Section Championship Game. Fans enjoying the last home game included Gerald Farren; Isabel Polanco with son, Brian, and granddaughter, Samantha; and Steve and Brian Peart with their mother, Kathy. Pat Davis and Sylvia Besana are helping to organize the Roseville Alumni Christmas Party. Award winners in the AgroArt competition during the Mandarin Festival in Newcastle include Ben Bice and Drew Bice of Newcastle, along with Matt Garcia, Carlos Ortiz and Jay Burkett of Penryn. Enjoying the new playground at Franklin School in Loomis were students Natalie Lidsey, Malia White, Joshua McCormick, Charlie Wyatt and Robbie Moore. Much of the funding for the playground project came from the PTC Scrip Program led by parents Sally Doupnik, Meredith Forcier and Kathleen Geary. 50 Years Ago Dec. 7, 1972 Services were held for Bo Johann Lund, 65, a Finland native and a Loomis resident. He was a fruit rancher for the past 46 years. Services were conducted for Walter Harmon Hodan, 80, a Friendship, Wisconsin native and a Loomis resident. A U.S. Army veteran of World War I, he was a member of the John A. Stacker, American Legion Post No. 775 of Loomis and Loomis Grange No. 638. Hodan was a retired landscape gardener and was not survived by any kin. Proceeds of the sale of See's Candy go to help the American Cancer Society. The special sales are being offered at a variety of businesses, including Mike Lee's Villa Market and Larry Fong's Savings Corner Market in Loomis. The Weimar Institution has a new owner and will remain open as a 24-hour emergency service medical center. The new Golden Age Club in Loomis met for the first time with 58 members. Officers are Anna Rogers, Marie Rasmussen, Dorothy Barnhill, Josephine Lee and Tressie Miller. Elected to the Placer County Committee on School District Organization include Ernie Sasaki of Rocklin, Deno Kostakis of Roseville and Stanley Nader of Lincoln. Directing the St. Albans Country Day School's Christmas program are Mrs. Joan Brace - music teacher, Barbara DeNike - English teacher and Carolyn Wyatt - drama teacher. Del Oro High School seniors earning "Grand Slam," all A's on their report cards, are Lynette DePaola, Nancy DuPriest, Don Hamasaki and Alan Sayles. The Neighborly Native Executive Committee representing Rocklin are Andre Gayaldo, Lil Quincey, W.H. Svendsen, Paul Fong, George Conroy, Marie Lucas and Howard Scribner. Roberta Osborn, a Del Oro High senior, was the first runner-up in the Auburn Elks Lodge Youth Leadership Contest. Cattlemen were in Roseville for the Sierra Bull Sale. Leak Angus Ranch, Loomis, consigned the highest-selling Angus bull, Mystic 20 of E.L. The bull was sold to Lauren Leavell of Lincoln for $850. Besides being the Loomis Constable, Hike Yego of Penryn has been a member of the Easter Seal Board, Placer Fair Board, Penryn School Board, 1963 Placer Grand Jury, Placer County Japanese American Citizens League and the Buddhist Church. 75 Years Ago May 1947 Lena Dias wishes to thank the person who took half of her potted Begonia from the back of the Loomis Post Office. "It would have been lots easier to have taken the whole thing, pot and all," she said. Visiting from Broadhead, Wisconsin are Mr. and Mrs. Sidney Stair, Jake Flickiger, and Mrs. Emma Muller. Mrs. Stair is the sister of Mrs. William Tudsbury of Loomis, Jake Flickiger is her grandfather, and Mrs. Muller, her mother. Ben Nelson of Rocklin is sailing to Stockholm, Sweden on the Queen Elizabeth to visit his two sisters and two brothers. Water is scarce this year and the principle of "little is good but more is better" does not always apply to irrigation. Nina Rogers of Roseville demonstrated Stanley Products at a mop party hosted by Mr. and Mrs. Joe Hernandez of Loomis. Contracts were offered to new teachers for Loomis School. Coming on board for the following school year are Miss Valerie Wilson, Mrs. Mary Brown, Mrs. Nancy Gardner, Mrs. Muriel Conner, Mr. Clair McMahon, and Mr. Harry Burcell. Resigning are Mr. Lloyd Lauer, Mrs. Ruth Walker, and Mrs. Lillie Nassi Clover. Mr. and Mrs. Angelo Dolce attended the Convention of the Grand Lodge of Odd Fellows in San Francisco. Viggo Jensen, former resident of Loomis, is visiting his sister. Mrs. Olga Brown. and his brother, George Jensen. Businessmen enjoyed the annual Dutch Lunch sponsored by the Loomis Volunteer Fire Department. A fire completely destroyed the Pacific Fruit Exchange and the California Fruit Exchange warehouse in Loomis. The Southern Pacific Depot suffered severe damage but was saved from total destruction by the local fire fighters. Main Drug Store and Gatt's Market were also in great danger, along with The Associated Service Station, the Loomis Cafe, the Orange Cove, and the Wayside Inn. Across the tracks, the home of Ben Takahashi was threatened. Only the fact that a strong wind was blowing away from the town saved the rest of Loomis from going up in smoke. Several "knights of the road" were believed to have been sleeping under the buildings.
