Placer Genealogical Society to hold meeting

The Placer County Genealogical Society is holding its general meeting Monday, Jan. 23, at 7 p.m. in the Beecher Room of the Auburn Library, 350 Nevada Street. Everyone is welcome to attend. Greg Romanowski will present An Introduction to Polish Genealogy. He's a member of the Polish American Club of Sacramento with many years of experience researching the Polish genealogy of his and other families. Placer-Sierra Railroad Heritage Society to meet The Placer-Sierra Railroad Heritage Society meeting on Tuesday, Jan. 24, will be a presentation on the history of the early wood bridges of the Central Pacific Railroad between Sacramento and the Nevada state line. The bridges were constructed from 1863, with the bridge across the American River, through 1868 and the Truckee River bridges. The Central Pacific was the western portion of the First Transcontinental Railroad, constructed from Sacramento to Promontory, Utah. The presentation will feature historic photographs of the structures taken from the 1860s through the 1870s. The speaker is Chuck Spinks, a civil engineer, historian and docent at the California State Railroad Museum. The society meets at 7 p.m. at the Auburn Veterans Memorial Hall at 100 East Street. Downtown Business Association meeting The Downtown Business Association will hold a general membership mixer and meeting Wednesday, Jan. 25, at General Gomez Arts and Events Center, 808 Lincoln Way. There will be free snacks and beverages at 6 p.m. with updates and discussion at 6:30. TOPS group meets weekly TOPS (Taking Off Pounds Sensibly) meets every Friday morning from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, 1279 High St., by the Gold Country Fairgrounds.
