Symmetry for Health celebrates 25 years in Folsom

Locally-based business, Symmetry for Health, celebrated 25 years in business last month, with a silver anniversary party attended by more than 150 guests, most notably Assemblyman Kevin Kiley and the Folsom Chamber of Commerce. If you're involved in the Folsom community, then you are probably no stranger to the names and faces of Patrick and Lee Anne Mummy, Symmetry's owners. Their involvement in the community includes giving back to local charities, Symmetry's involvement in serving local police and fire departments, and sponsorship of so many of the local events we know and love, such as the Healthy Folsom Fair, Folsom Pro Rodeo and others. Simply put, Patrick and Lee Anne Mummy are involved just about everywhere in our wonderful town. Patrick Mummy received his degree from San Diego State in athletic training but he credits the inspiration for Symmetry to his own personal experience with chronic pain and injury as an athlete. He played Division 1 baseball at San Diego State, trained day and night, and saw every practitioner he could but a cyclical list of injuries left him repeatedly disappointed by western medicine, benched from play and with more questions than answers. "It was an incredibly frustrating experience to train day and night, yet still have to see every practitioner I could from physical therapists to chiropractors to the team physician," Mummy said. "I was stretched, pulled, kneaded, taped, injected, iced and adjusted, only to get temporary relief at best. This was not supposed to happen. I was in a field that was supposed to provide the answers for injury and pain but no one could give me the answers I was looking for to heal my pain." In the last game of his senior year, the day before Major League Baseball scouts were coming out to watch him play, Mummy's ankle blew out again, effectively ending his baseball career. Aggravated by his chronic injuries hindering his dreams of playing Major League Baseball and disappointed by physical therapy, he turned to corrective exercise. But even with methods such as Egoscue, Mummy said something important was missing: quantifying the body to eliminate guesswork. And with that idea, he created Symmetry's first edition of the patented measuring kit that Symmetry practitioners use to measure not where you hurt but why you hurt. Then the goal is sequentially restructuring your body's neuromuscular compensation patterns to realign the body and get out of pain. Clients go home fully supported with app access to their custom corrective exercise routines, a messaging system and a compliance tracker to ensure their success and support. Twenty-five years ago, out of both personal and professional frustration with the limitations of Western medicine in treating chronic pain and injury, and out of the hope and confidence he could change lives, Mummy founded Symmetry for Health. He moved Symmetry and his two daughters from San Diego to Folsom in 2007. Today, Symmetry is officially an internationally practiced modality based out of Folsom, with Symmetry practitioners now being certified as far as India, Canada and across the United States. Symmetry works with Folsom Police officers and firefighters, Parkinson's patients and professional athletes such as Az Hakim, Max 'Pain' Griffin, Anthony 'Fluffy' Hernandez and many others. Mummy loves baseball, and we're sure in another life he went pro but he was destined for something bigger than professional sports: changing the face of modern medicine and how we treat chronic pain and injury. With more than 20,000 lives changed and Symmetry Practitioners now officially across the globe as well as across the United States, his dreams of baseball were clearly outweighed by his destiny.
