Colfax High locked down Tuesday morning

This story was updated at 2:42 p.m. Jan. 24, 2023. The Placer County Sheriff's Office confirmed at 1:37 p.m. that the lockdown at Colfax High School has been lifted. The Placer Union High School District (PUHSD) confirmed the campus needs to be cleared immediately. Students who drive can leave the campus, and students waiting to be picked up by parents are waiting in the Learning Commons. Colfax Elementary School District Superintendent Andrew Giannini confirmed the shelter-in-place at Colfax Elementary School has been lifted and students are returning to usual activities. School will dismiss at 2:30 p.m., with buses running as usual, and all after-school activities were canceled. Giannini also confirmed all activities will resume Wednesday. Colfax High School was placed on lockdown Tuesday morning following a report of an individual who was not a student possibly being on campus. PUHSD announced at 10:54 a.m. via social media that staff and students were safe, and law enforcement placed the school on a precautionary lockdown and was walking the campus. Angela Musallam, public information officer for the Placer County Sheriff's Office, confirmed the report was received just before 10:15 a.m. The Sheriff's Office confirmed the report was of "an unauthorized male juvenile on campus potentially posing a security threat." According to the Sheriff's Office, the male juvenile was located by deputies in the Auburn area and the investigation is ongoing. According to PUHSD Communications Specialist Sarah Rath, students were barricaded in classrooms behind closed, locked doors and waiting for law enforcement to secure the campus. Rath confirmed, "They are well versed in these procedures," and the lockdown was not related to anything happening near the campus. "Please do not travel to the school, as your presence could interfere with our safety procedure and law enforcement activity," Colfax Principal Chasity Raybuck-Bonilla said in a message to the Colfax community. Burruss reported on Facebook that Colfax Elementary School was also on lockdown as a result of the suspicious person on the high school campus. Giannini confirmed on the district website that students and staff were safe while sheltering in place, as advised by law enforcement. Giannini confirmed students and teachers are continuing to learn and administration was conducting escorted bathroom breaks. After-school programs and sports games and practices were canceled Tuesday. Auburn Journal reporter Traci Newell contributed to this report.
