Through the eyes of a child

The Art League of Lincoln's focus on youth and art continues into February, after hosting the Lincoln Youth Art Exhibit in January. The current exhibit, "Through the Eyes of a Child," features the following prominent local authors and illustrators of children's' books: internationally-acclaimed pop-up book author/creator David Carter; author/illustrator Matt Konar (including a special collaboration with gourd artist Jenn Norpchen); authors Connie McClennan; and Erin Colvin with illustrations by Lori Paskey. In addition to the author/illustrators' books and art, the exhibit is full of youth-inspired imagery. This is a must-see exhibit for adults and children alike. Remember when you watched Disney and other such movies with your kids, and there were jokes/references just for the adults? Keep your eyes peeled for these gems in the exhibit! This exhibit is brimming with art that will interest and delight children. "Loretta", a brightly-colored octopus by artist Lori Paskey, welcomes visitors into the exhibit. David Carter's extraordinary pop-up books are on display, not only for viewing but also for tactile experience. These creations are truly the genius work of a paper engineer! Enigmatic portraits of children, animals, a world of fantasy and imagination await all. Adults, be sure and check out Karen Fulk's large oil paintings such as "The Key to Paradise." There's so much to see and interpret here with profound and humorous implications. The Art League of Lincoln (aka "ALL") is holding two receptions open to the public in February. Its 2nd Thursday reception will be from 5 to 7 p.m. Thursday, where visitors can meet the artists, enjoy art, wine, light refreshments and acoustic music provided by Rockstar Music Academy. A special family reception will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, presented in collaboration with the Lincoln Public Library. Book authors will read from their books and Kathryn Hunt of the Lincoln Public Library will also be read. Apple juice and cookies will be served at the family reception. Signed books will be available for sale at the family reception. The Art League's focus on youth includes art classes for kids. A "Paint 'N Create" class for kids will be held on March 4 and a Kids Art Camp is scheduled for April 3 to 6 (during school break), in which kids will get to create a clay project as well as use other mediums. These classes are a win-win-win for our community, as we are presenting these classes in collaboration with Lincoln High School Career Technical Education student teachers, along with the city of Lincoln.
