10 Years Ago April 11, 2013 Raquel Palafox, 20, is recovering from an accident where she was hit by a vehicle on Taylor Road. She was spending a leisurely day with her mother on her first day of spring break when the accident happened. A 2010 Del Oro High School graduate, Palafox is attending University of California at Davis on an academic scholarship. A two-man play to be presented at the High Hand Fruit Shed in Loomis will take an intimate look at a film legend, John Barrymore. In a movie career bridging the silent and sound eras, Barrymore was acting royalty and the thespian lineage ran from his grandparents to his grandchildren. In the play, his grandson, John Blythe Barrymore, will be in one role and Penryn actor Steve Barkett will have the honor of playing the role of John Barrymore. There will be lots to see and do at the town of Loomis Earth Day. Ryan Brown, 8, and his little brother Jacob, 1, enjoyed meeting a donkey at last year's event. Casque Wines earned a Gold Medal with its 2011 White varietal "Roussanne." Owner and winemaker Kevin Stevenson said, "I felt like it had great vintage… It's my favorite white wine we have ever done." The wine tasting room is located at the intersection of Horseshoe Bar and Auburn Folsom Roads. A rescued spotted owl was released into the wild by Gold Country Wildlife Rescue's Kari Freidig. The owl, found anemic and weak, was rescued on the playground at Parker Whitney Elementary School in Rocklin. That area is OK for barn owls and great horned owls but a spotted owl in a highly-populated area such as Rocklin is a rarity. Twin brothers, Don and Ron Verlin, are both college basketball coaches. Don has been the head coach at the University of Idaho since 2008. Ron was just named as the new head coach at the University of Pacific. Graduates of Del Oro High School in 1983, they took the reins of the Del Oro freshman boys' team when they were just 20 years old. A team of Loomis Grammar School seventh-graders won the regional ExploraVision contest sponsored by Toshiba and the National Science Teachers Association. The team explored solutions to brain disorders and were tasked with the challenge to imagine ideas for future technologies. Team members were Dezi Bunio, Leahlani Hulse, Megan Kelley and Gavin Thompson, along with teacher coaches Melissa McCormick and Kristine Sohrakoff. They qualified to compete at the national level. 25 Years Ago April 9, 1998 Edward Erickson, 77, an Indianapolis native, died. He received the Silver Star and Purple Heart Medals while serving in the Army during World War II. He was a life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 904 of Rocklin and one of the original members of St. Peter and Paul Catholic Church of Rocklin. Marine 2nd Lt. John Hahn, son of Mr. and Mrs. John Hahn II of Rocklin, graduated from Officer Candidate School at Quantico, Virginia. Navy Seaman Steven Cunningham, son of Mary Cunningham of Loomis, earned the Battle Efficiency Ribbon while serving on the aircraft carrier USS George Washington deployed to the Arabian Gulf. Marine Pfc. David Schuermann completed a six-month deployment, which included the Arabian Gulf aboard the USS Peleliu Amphibious Ready Group. The son of retired Air Force Major and Mrs. Robert Schuermann, he is a 1993 graduate of Del Oro High School. Steven Mahony, son of Mr. and Mrs. David Mahoney of Rocklin, completed basic training at Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego. The public will be able to meet batik artist Helen Phillips and view her work at the Granite Bay Library. She takes many ideas for her art from her travels. "The colors and textures of Italy are dramatic in batik," Phillips said. Loomis Basin Historical Society member Barbara Nichols researched the building in town housing the Stove Connection and learned it was built in the early 1900s with the express purpose of being a print shop. The first newspaper to serve the area was published at the site by M. Denton and was called The Loomis Recorder. The Loomis Gold and later the Loomis News were also printed at that location. Murals printed on buildings in downtown Loomis will be featuring fruit packing labels. Artist Brenda Dominguez was commissioned to paint Blue Anchor's "California Fruit Exchange" label on Main Drug Store. Dave Longthorn's work will feature Scibner & Mayden's "Valley of the Gods" label on the facade of Nelthorpe & Son Appliance store. Van Johnson was honored as the Boy Scout Distinguished Citizen of the Year Award. The president and CEO of Sutter Health, Johnson also achieved the rank of Eagle Scout. During his five years as bishop of his Latter-day Saints Church, he emphasized the importance of scouting. 50 Years Ago April 15, 1973 Funeral services were held for William Scott Daugherty, 83, a Goldswaite, Texas native. Daugherty was a retired fruit rancher in Penryn where he had resided for the past 28 years. Area students selected as State Scholars for the academic year 1973-74 are Cynthia Hubbard of Penryn and Greg Getty, Joel Hayashida, John Bradfute and Ronald Takahashi of Loomis. Mike Lee, District 4 representative on the Placer Board of Supervisors, discussed the Loomis Basin General Plan, the long-range forecast and outline of how our area will develop. "Without the General Plan, we could end up having developers building anywhere in any way they desired. The basin could become another San Fernando Valley, Concord Valley or Los Angeles," Lee said. Whiskey is spelled "whisky" everywhere except in the U.S. In this country when you order whiskey, you'll be served bourbon, an American-made liquor distilled and aged here. In other parts of the world, you'll get Scotch, a distinctive product of Scotland. It is usually a blend of rich malt, whiskies and lighter Scottish grain whiskies, all distilled and aged in Scotland. MacMillan Bloedel Limited, Canada's largest forest products company, is looking for a train buff who has private trackage and extra cash. The company is selling "Old 1055," a 1928 90-ton, saddle-tanked steam locomotive. Any dog found in the act of killing, wounding or pursuing livestock or poultry can be legally shot. An alternative is the owner of the livestock or poultry being entitled to collect twice the value of the animals killed or twice the value of the damage sustained by injuries. Winning the "World Brick Cleaning Championship" was a Del Oro High alumni team of Richard Lewis, Alan Yamashiro, Diana Bailey, Mark Takahashi and David Lewis. The competition was a fundraising event to help the Del Oro High School Band get to Vienna, Austria for the International Band Festival. Brick cleaning began after band members demolished a brick building in town. As part of the deal, they were given approximately 20,000 bricks to sell. But there was one catch. Before you could sell the brick, you had to scrape off the excess mortar without breaking it. 75 Years Ago October 1947 Residents will vote for Committeemen for 3 Communities. Candidates in Community One include: E. Garbolino, John Mourier, Steven Riolo and Frank Riolo of Roseville. Community Two: E.J. Pilz of Penryn; Harvey Carlisle, Francis Lindsay, Chester Hall, Ed Court and Frank Nute of Loomis. The Alyn W. Butler Post, American Legion No. 169 of Roseville, sponsored an Armistice Dance in the Eagles Hall. The Loomis Terrace Subdivision sites are selling fast with Circle Drive to be oiled. Among those purchasing homes include Mr. and Mrs. Richard Brown, Mr. and Mrs. Melfoad Green, Mr. and Mrs. Stoddard, Mr. and Mrs. Lee Enos, and Mr. and Mrs. Herman Gutierrez. Mr. Gus Reeves and Lawrence Woods are constructing four new homes. Lots are still available at $550 to $700: see Floyd Shupe. The Loomis Woman's Club's annual raffle will benefit a Hostess House in Yountville for disabled veterans. Those boys are greatly in need of a building where their families can stay during visits. The Roseville touch football team is coming to town to play the Loomis Lobsters. A reception was held for Reverend Hansen, the new minister of the Penryn Methodist Church. The event was also a farewell party for Reverend Ralston of Newcastle. Spraying cattle with DDT for horn flies also provides control of cattle fever ticks. Formerly, groups of cattle were sprayed with arsenical poisons on antitick drives. We may be short on cattle in a few years if the practice of selling all the young stock continues. Stockmen can plan wisely for the future if they sell off their old cows now and raise a good herd of heifers. The old cows are bringing a good price on the market. No one ever settled the question of which came first "the chicken or the egg." However, it is possible to report the number of feathers on a chicken. Students at school guessed how many and the guesses ranged from 10,000 to 100,000. To settle the debate, one student brought an average-size chicken to school. After the plucking, the answer was 8,537 feathers.
