Mia Hart a good swimmer and teacher

Mia Hart has been a member of the Broadstone Barracuda since she was 6. The 2023 Vista del Lago graduate is now off to Boise State University this fall. At the Suburban Swim League championship meet last month, Hart qualified in three out of her five events. She won the 100 breast stroke with her best time of 1:13.09, placed third in the 100 free and fifth in the 100 individual medley. Hart also competed in the Meet of Champions meet the following week. She qualified for finals again in the 100 IM, the 50 freestyle, the 100 freestyle and the 100 breast stroke. "Mia is a strong member of our team and truly exemplifies the spirit of the Barracuda team," Broadstone coach Wendy Webster said. "She is a hard worker who encourages those around her to do their best. She is a friend to all and works hard to create a strong inclusive swim community. "Mia also helped coach our junior program. She really connected with our junior barracudas, who are just learning to swim a lap and helped them feel comfortable and loved. She was a go-getter as a coach; needing very little instruction but helped many kids reach their goals." Folsom Telegraph: You graduated from Vista del Lago. What are your plans for the fall? Mia Hart: I will be attending Boise State University and studying psychology. FT: Do sports run in your family? MH: Yes, growing up my dad was very into baseball, he played it throughout his whole childhood and through high school. FT: How long have you been playing swimming and how did you get your start in it? MH: I started swimming when I was 6 years old. My best friends started swimming and since they did it all summer, I wanted to be with them, so I did it too and I fell in love. FT: Have you ever been involved in any other sports? MH: When I was super little I played soccer for a year and I was not a fan. As soon as I started swimming that was all I ever wanted to do. FT: What do you enjoy about swimming? MH: I love that I get to compete with myself. Yes, I compete with my teammates and other swimmers in our league, but it is always a competition with myself to see how I have improved. Looking up at the scoreboard to see a best time is a thrill that nothing else gives me. FT: What do you enjoy specifically about swimming with the Barracudas? MH: I have always felt like I was part of another family. Growing up I have been shown nothing but support from all of my coaches; pushing us at practice, cheering us on at meets, and being at our side after a bad race. After becoming a coach myself, being able to do that to the younger generation of our team is such an honor to be a part of. FT: You had a great weekend at the Suburban Swim League championships. What do you feel was your greatest accomplishment? MH: My greatest accomplishment was placing first and getting a best time in the 100 breast stroke. Growing up, I watched my fellow teammates finishing in first and constantly getting best times. At that time I thought that would never be me so it was very rewarding to prove to my childhood self that I was wrong. FT: Is that also your favorite event? If not, what is? MH: Yes, the 100 breast stroke is my favorite event. I definitely have a love-hate relationship with it but I do enjoy it a lot. Breast stroke is all technique and it took me until this past season to get it down. FT: What will you remember most about swimming with the Barracudas? MH: I will remember the friendships I have made and the relationships with my coaches. I hope to never forget how accomplishing it feels after a good race. FT: You also helped coach some of the younger swimmers this season? How was that experience? MH: This was one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. When I started coaching the junior barracuda program last year, they knew nothing about swimming, and this year I got to watch some of them race a lap for the first time. Watching kids work so hard during practice and then seeing the excitement on their faces after a race is so rewarding. Some days can definitely be hard but moments like that make up for it. FT: What was your favorite subject or class in school? MH: I had never been a fan of history until my junior year U.S. History class. After that history was my favorite. FT: Do you have a favorite genre of music or a favorite singer/group/rapper? MH: My current favorite singers are Billy Joel and David Bowie. FT: Favorite food? MH: Chicken tortilla soup or my mom's enchiladas. FT: Do you have any pets? Tell us about them. MH: I have a dog named Charlie. He is a very interesting dog. He really enjoys attention and will not let you sit next to him without you petting him. FT: Do you have any hobbies? What do you like to do in your free time? MH: I enjoy reading, crocheting, sewing, cooking and swimming. Most of my free time is taken up by swimming but I love reading. FT: What inspires you in sports? MH: I am inspired to reach the goals I have set for myself; I have a goal before every single race I swim. My competitors around me are also huge inspirations. A good friend of mine, Sydney, has always been a huge inspiration for me, she is extremely talented and I have always strived to be like her. FT: What job or profession do you hope to have some day? MH: I hope to become a child therapist. I have always known that I wanted to work with kids.
