Tuesday crash in Auburn results in pedestrian fatality

This story was updated at 12:02 p.m. Aug. 24, 2023. The Auburn Police Department confirmed a vehicle accident involving a pedestrian on Highway 49 Tuesday night resulted in a fatality. Lt. Bryan Morrison said APD's communications center received a report of a vehicle versus pedestrian collision in the 400 block of Highway 49 around 8:20 p.m. Responding officers conducted lifesaving efforts until EMS personnel arrived. Although lifesaving efforts were attempted, Morrison said EMS personnel later pronounced the pedestrian deceased. According to Angela Musallam, public information officer for the Placer County Sheriff's Office, the Coroner's Office identified the pedestrian as Roberto Aviles Carlos, a 40-year-old transient from the Auburn area. The southbound lanes of Highway 49 between Palm and Elm avenues were closed until 11:40 p.m., Morrison confirmed. According to Morrison, it appears, through early stages of the investigation, the pedestrian was crossing the roadway from the east curb to the west curb outside of the crosswalk. Morrison confirmed drugs and alcohol do not appear to be a factor, and the driver has been cooperative with the investigation and consented to a blood draw. The crash remains under investigation.
