Sierra College roundup: Football wins overtime thriller, women's volleyball wins third straight

Sierra College football won a double-overtime thriller in its first game under the lights at Buzz Ostrom Stadium on Saturday, defeating Reedley 26-23. The Wolverines improved to 2-1, which marked the third time Sierra came from behind in the fourth quarter this season. After falling behind 17-14, Reedley drove 93 yards in eight plays to kick an equalizing 20-yard field goal to send the game into overtime. The Tigers struck first with a 21-yard run by Nick Osho, but the Tigers missed the extra point. Sierra responded and tied the score at 23 on a three-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Cruz Herrera to Dontae Robinson, but the point-after attempt was blocked. Wolverines kicker Andrew Dennis kicked a 35-yard field goal to put Sierra on top in the second overtime and Sierra's defense made a stand, forcing Reedley to turn to Jayden Evangelo for a 41-yard field-goal attempt, which sailed wide left as Sierra hung on for the victory. Herrera completed 15 of 31 passes for 150 yards and two touchdowns. Herrera ran the ball nine times for 26 yards. Semaj Clark had a strong performance with six catches for 76 yards and a touchdown while Jeremiah Moore had five receptions for 40 yards. The Wolverines (2-1) will hit the road for the next two weeks, beginning this Saturday against San Joaquin Delta at 1 p.m. at McNair High School in Stockton. Women's volleyball Sierra women's volleyball won its third consecutive match Friday at Sacramento City 3-0, improving to 10-2 on the season. The Wolverines are ranked fourth in the California Community College Athletic Association and look poised to make a run at a Big 8 championship. The Wolverines dominated at the net in the first set, riding a 16-kill performance to a 25-17 victory. The Panthers slowed Sierra's aggression at the net in sets two and three, but it was to no avail as the Wolverines pulled out 25-19 and 25-22 victories to sweep the match. Paige Skinner led the way with 12 kills, while Taylor Stolz had 10. Sofia Guerrero had 25 digs for the Wolverines. Grace Rodriguez had 12 assists. Sierra started a two-match homestand against Diablo Valley on Wednesday night before hosting Folsom Lake on Friday. Both matches will be at Jessup University's activities building while the new Sierra gym is built. Women's water polo The Sierra women's water polo team suffered its first loss last Thursday, falling to West Valley 18-12 in Saratoga. The Wolverines fell behind 6-0 in the first quarter to the Vikings. Sierra responded by scoring five of the last six goals in the period to cut the West Valley lead to 7-5. After leading at the half 9-7, the Vikings took control in the third quarter, outscoring Sierra 4-1. Anastaija Koreni had five goals for West Valley, while Aiyana Mendoza scored four. For Sierra, Heidi Green scored four goals while Bailey Hollick netted three. The Wolverines fell to 4-1 loss and returned home Wednesday to take on Fresno City. Men's water polo Sierra men's water polo went 2-2 at the Mt. San Antonio College tournament last weekend, beating Cuesta and Cypress while falling to Mt. San Antonio and Orange Coast. Friday's win over Cuesta was the first of the season for the Wolverines, as they escaped with a narrow 11-10 victory. Sierra followed with a 15-12 triumph over Cypress. Sierra (2-6) will be back in action Sept. 27 at Modesto.
