Assemblyman takes bill suggestions in contest

High school students in Placer and El Dorado County can give suggestions for state bills in Assemblyman Joe Patterson's Second Annual Bill Contest. "A bill proposal can range from the penalty for a crime to the amount of money that can be spent on a program," said Patterson on the contest website. "A bill idea can come from anyone but only a state legislator can carry the proposal through the state legislature." Any student attending a high school in Assembly District 5 is eligible to enter. Participants are asked to include a community concern and a proposal outlining a solution with resources such as studies, articles, or other evidence. Those eligible can submit a bill idea at ad05.asmrc.org/bill-idea-contest/ until Dec. 15. "The winner will have their bill proposal introduced to the State Assembly, a day trip to the Capitol, a VIP tour and lunch with the Assemblyman Joe Patterson," said legislative director Chloe Bowman. "The winner is also invited by our office to help come and testify as a witness in support through the legislative process if they are interested to do so." According to Patterson, the main purpose of the contest is to teach students the significance of bills and their voice. He said, "I think it's extremely important for students to express and relay their ideas. These students will be future leaders, business owners and fellow community members and their voices matter!"
