Roseville incident report: Thieves and scammers

The Roseville Police Department publishes a bi-weekly crime report. Here are the incidents for Dec. 27-Jan. 13: Jan. 5 At 1:34 a.m., a victim stated they had a wallet on a strap around their wrist while looking at items in a store on the 9400 block of Fairway Drive. Video footage showed the victim's wallet fall off their wrist while looking at merchandise then showed a white male adult walk up to the area and pick up the wallet. The suspect then walked away from camera view before walking back into view and removing something from the wallet before exiting. At 11 a.m., someone had been speaking with a suspect regarding purchasing a highly trained guide dog worth $1,000. They spoke over the phone and face to face near Diamond Oaks Road to get to know each other better and make sure there was a good match to sell the dog. The victim decided to loan the dog to the suspect for one week and claimed the suspect signed a contract and verbally agreed to this. The suspect has refused to return the borrowed dog or make any payment. At 4:01 p.m., an unknown suspect stole a wallet from someone eating at a restaurant on the 1200 block of Roseville Parkway. The wallet contained a driver's license and various credit and debit cards. Upon review of surveillance, the video identified an adult man walking into the store, sitting down behind the person whose wallet was stolen, reaching into their purse, and taking the wallet. The suspect then walked out of the store with the wallet. The video was from a distance and no identifiable features or characteristics were captured. Jan. 4 At 7:30 p.m., unknown suspect(s) stole items from within a locked vehicle on Marcia Way. There was no damage to the vehicle and entry was made through unknown means. The vehicle owner left a bag of property in the back seat, and items stolen totaled $1,255. Dec. 31 At 7 p.m., an unknown suspect stole two unlocked bikes from in front of an apartment on the 1700 block of Roseville Parkway. The bicycles were located on Sunrise Ave. via Apple Air Tags. The suspect is still unknown and the total value of both bikes is $1,400. Dec. 30 At 8 a.m., a victim on the 400 block of Brennen Circle stated he contacted someone after finding a posting on Facebook Marketplace for a gaming computer and reached out to purchase the computer. After communicating by text, the victim ultimately agreed to pay $180 for the computer and transferred the money to the suspect via Zelle. The suspect continued stating he would provide the tracking information for the shipment for several days after the victim agreed to pay additional for shipping, which he did. Eventually, the victim determined he would not receive the computer and asked for a refund. After a brief exchange of text messages, the suspect became threatening. The victim has received neither a refund nor a computer. Dec. 28 At 11:51 a.m., a rear passenger window was broken on the 2000 block of Taylor Road. An Apple Macbook Pro was taken and was worth about $1,700. At 5:30 p.m., unknown suspect(s) entered an unlocked vehicle on the 300 block of Cirby Way, stole items and caused damage to the vehicle. The total loss and damages amounted to $1,850. Dec. 27 At 5:20 p.m., some type of skimming device was located on an ATM by a customer at a store on the 900 block of Sunrise Avenue. No victims of fraud were located, and a report was taken for the placement of the skimming device. The device appeared to be a homemade skimmer with a camera, battery and SD card. Dec. 25 At 12 a.m., someone came into contact with a suspect via an online dating platform. The suspect stayed at their residence at Fitzgerald Way for one day and did not notice anything out of the ordinary for several weeks. She then realized she could not locate her wedding rings or antique train set, which had been stored in a locked cabinet. She has been unable to get into contact with the suspect since the alleged theft. Dec. 21 At 11:30 a.m., someone received a phone call at their residence at Angelrock Loop from a caller who identified himself as "Jeff" that worked for Congress. He said "Jeff" told him he had won $7 million in a lottery and he needed to get approval from various organizations to receive the winnings. "Jeff" instructed him to send money to set up an account to deposit winnings. He went to a local branch and wrote a check for $1,560 and deposited it into the account as instructed. After "Jeff" called back to request and additional $1,000, he realized he was being scammed and ended communication. He had a resulting monetary loss of $1,560.
