Bulldogs trip up Trojans; Trojans beat Eagles

Playing one of their best and cleanest games of the season on Friday night, Folsom High's varsity girls' basketball team defeated Oak Ridge, 66-20. Holding an Oak Ridge team to 20 points; that's something that hasn't happened in a long time. "I loved our focus and our energy right from the tip," Folsom coach Lynn Wolking said. "Our aggressiveness and intensity as a team; we shared the ball from the start to the end. It's not normal to play that well and with that much confidence versus Oak Ridge. Usually those games are ugly." Kamryn Mafua led the way with 13 points. Avery Masters scored 12, and Jada Tupou finished with 10. Ella Uriarte dished out six assists. Oak Ridge coach Steve White continues to be impressed by the Bulldogs. "They've got every piece they need to be successful," White said. "I thought we had some good shots early that just didn't fall. Then we got away from our game plan and I didn't do a good job of re-focusing them and after that it turned into a good, old-fashioned butt-kicking." Saturday night the Bulldogs played Archbishop Riordan, a team out of San Francisco, and the Bulldogs won it, 77-43. "That team was really competitive and the scoreboard doesn't show how good they are," Wolking said. "We were fortunate. They were athletic and played frantic defense that caused us some trouble in the beginning, but they also had trouble scoring against our defense." By halftime, the Bulldogs led by about 20 and extended it from there. Mafua, who was given the Most Outstanding Player Award after the game, had 12 points and seven rebounds. Sophia Mindermann led the team with 14 points. Avery Masters scored 11, while Tupou scored 10 and had five rebounds. Oak Ridge left Folsom High's gym Friday night and didn't meet up again until a rare Monday game at Vista del Lago. It was probably a good thing. "I told the team Friday that we had to learn from this and move on and have got to have some belief the next time we step on the floor," White said. "Because Monday is not normally a good practice day for us, it's probably a good thing that we played Vista. After losing the way we did Friday, it's important that we got back on track with a game and a win on Monday. We jumped out to an 11-2 lead and just sort of built on it throughout the game. We held Ella, their leading scorer, to 10 points until she scored a couple more baskets late in the game so I felt we did a good job containing her." Liv Yergensen led the Trojans with 19 points, while Ava Edwards scored nine, and Kendra Alameda grabbed nine rebounds. "For the most part, the win got us back on track," White said. "We've just got to get better and make rebounding matter to us." While Folsom plays host to Granite Bay on Friday, Oak Ridge travels to Whitney.
