CIF NorCal Regional roundup: Del Oro, West Park boys advance, as do Whitney, Valley Christian girls

The CIF NorCal Regional Tournaments are here and just a few schools remain standing as they battle for the right to play for a state championship at Golden 1 Center in Sacramento on March 8 and 9. Let's take a look at how some of the local schools did: Boys basketball D-I: No. 5 St. Ignatius 67, No. 12 Rocklin 51: Rocklin saw its most successful season in recent memory end Tuesday in San Francisco, as the Thunder fell to St. Ignatius (21-7) in the opening round of the CIF NorCal Regional Tournament. Even with the loss, the Thunder still have plenty to hang their hat on this season as they finished 28-4. Rocklin won its first outright Sierra Foothill League championship since 2009 and its 28 wins are its most in 15 years. D-II: No. 6 Del Oro 60, No. 11 Half Moon Bay 55: The Golden Eagles led by 13 at the half and 14 after three quarters behind an impressive performance from Caden Pinnick, who scored 20 points. The Cougars (19-9) battled back in the fourth but Del Oro (25-8) was able to thwart their comeback attempts. Reid Brear added 17 points and Jake Williams scored 11. Del Oro remained home Thursday in hopes of reaching the NorCal semis, as it hosts No. 14 Menlo-Atherton (21-7). The Bears beat No. 3 Sacramento 70-64 on Tuesday night. D-III: No. 9 West Park 63, No. 8 Enterprise 49: West Park made school history Tuesday night, winning its first regional playoff game in its first appearance as the Panthers downed Enterprise in Redding in D-III. The ninth-seeded Panthers (24-7) looked to pull an upset on the road Thursday at No. 1 Santa Cruz (24-6) in the quarterfinals. D-VI: No. 1 Cornerstone Christian 97, No. 8 Valley Christian 90: The Lions outscored the Cougars 32-17 in the fourth quarter Wednesday night in Antioch but couldn't complete the comeback. Valley Christian finished its season at 19-12. Girls basketball D-I: No. 8 Whitney 53, No. 9 Piedmont 41: The Lady Wildcats locked down defensively, opening the regional tournament with a double-digit win over state powerhouse Piedmont in Rocklin. It was Whitney's first regional playoff victory. The Wildcats (23-9) were to remain home Thursday night against No. 16 McClatchy (25-6), which stunned top-seeded Pinewood in the first round 66-64. D-IV: No. 8 Lincoln-San Francisco 56, No. 9 Lincoln 48: The Lady Zebras' season ended in San Francisco on Tuesday night with a loss to eighth-seeded Lincoln of San Francisco. Maya Hodge scored 16 points and reeled in 15 rebounds, while Isa Keidel racked up 12 points. The Lady Zebras end the season at 24-6 after reaching the D-III section semifinals and winning a fourth consecutive Foothill Valley League title. D-V: No. 5 Valley Christian 80, No. 12 Summit Shasta 70: The Lady Lions bounced back from Saturday's Division V Sac-Joaquin Section championship loss to Bear River with a first-round win in the regional. Gabby Jackson-Brown led the way with 32 points, while Janet Donkor scored 25 and Mariah Contreras 12. The Lady Lions (21-7) stayed home Thursday night, hosting No. 13 Oakland (19-10) in the quarterfinals. The Lady Wildcats upset No. 4 Half Moon Bay 58-50 on Tuesday night.
