Herbert Marshall 10/23/1926-3/16/2024

Herbert G. Marshall, 97, passed away on March 16th, 2024. Born on October 23, 1926 he was raised in Newcastle, CA. Went to Placer Union High School and graduated in 1945. He lettered in Varsity Baseball and Track as a freshman, and later, lettered in Football and Basketball. He was on the two-year championship football team and voted the most outstanding player in the 1943 Kendall Arnett Basketball Tournament. He served in the Pacific Theater in the US Navy, stationed on the USS Manila Bay Aircraft Carrier. Upon his return from the Service, he attended Placer College and played local semi-pro baseball with the Auburn Cubs for twelve years with a batting average of 329, and one-year in pro baseball with the Salt Lake City Bees and Stockton Ports. Manager of Del Paso Manor Little League Teams from 1961-1972. He was employed with the Telephone Company in Auburn beginning in 1950 and worked as a lineman for four years. In 1954 he was transferred to the Commercial Department in Marysville, CA for four years as an Outside Representative. He was then transferred to Yuba City for three years then moved to Sacramento, CA in 1960. He worked in the Marketing Department on California State Accounts. In 1964 he was transferred to the Government Relations Department and made Manager of the State Capitol Communications Department working with Governors Pat Brown, Ronald Reagan, Jerry Brown, Michael Dukmejian, Pete Wilson and Gary Davis. He also worked with other State Agencies including the State Senate, State Assembly, Lieutenant Governor, and State Controller's office. He worked with YMCA from 1961-1968. He was a member of Loaves and Fishes, Pacific Bell Pioneer Wagoneer's Travel Club, Newcastle Portuguese Hall Association, L.U.S.O., I.D.E.S., Portuguese Historical and Cultural Society. Installed in the Northern CA Baseball Old Timers Association Hall of Fame in 1998, LaSalle Baseball Club Hall of Fame in 2004, and inducted in the Valley League Baseball Hall of Fame. Stephanie Ebel (Oregon), Great Grand Niece: April Loe (Oregon), Great Grand Nephew: Colton Ebel (Oregon), Very Close Cousins: Yvonne Elder and Helen Matel (Auburn). A Visitation and Rosary will be held at Chapel of the Hills, 1331 Lincoln Way in Auburn on Tuesday April 2 at 4 pm to 7pm. A Funeral Mass will be held at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 1162 Lincoln Way in Auburn, Wednesday April 3 at 11 am. A Graveside service will take place at Newcastle Cemetery at 1 pm with a reception to follow at The Ridge Country Club in Auburn from 1 pm to 4 pm.
