Suspect in Colfax shooting identified; shot deputy recovering

The Placer County Sheriff's Office identified Stephen Todd Sharp, 37, as the suspect involved in a shooting in Colfax on May 2. Sharp, originally from Tennessee, was living in his van in the Colfax area, the Sheriff's Office confirmed. Around 11 p.m. May 2, deputies patrolling the South Auburn Street area located a van in the McDonald's parking lot matching a description related to a burglary the day before. Sharp became uncooperative when contacted and opened fire, striking a deputy, after responders attempted to use de-escalation techniques to gain compliance. The Sheriff's Special Enforcement Team was called in and determined Sharp was deceased inside the van. The Sheriff's Office shared Monday afternoon Deputy Porter was discharged from Sutter Roseville Medical Center and met cheers as he walked to his car. "We want to thank everyone for the support over the past several days" the Sheriff's Office shared on Facebook. "Placer County is a special place." The Sheriff's Office shared the below video of Deputy Porter's procession home: In response to inquiries on how to support Deputy Porter, the Placer 10-35 Foundation organized a fundraiser for the deputy. According to the fundraiser page, Deputy Richard Porter is a newer deputy in training and is married and expecting his first child in a few weeks. Donations will assist Deputy Porter and his family with "challenges posed by a lengthy recovery, mounting costs associated with his recovery and the arrival of a young baby," the website notes. As of Monday afternoon, $19,600 of the $25,000 goal had been raised. The fundraiser will remain open for an additional 55 days. The Sheriff's Office confirmed the incident remains under investigation and updates regarding Deputy Porter's recovery progress will be provided.
