Deloris Jane Houseman Daugherty 4/4/1930 - 5/12/2024

With saddened hearts we write that our dear mom, Deloris Jane Daugherty, passed away on May 12, 2024, at the age of 94. She was born on April 4, 1930 in Missouri and traveled to Penryn, CA when she was in 3rd grade. She Attended Penryn Elementary School and Placer High School. She met Hershell S. Daugherty and married him on June 11, 1948 and they started their family of 4 children. While the kids were young, she worked at all the Penryn, Loomis, Auburn and Newcastle Fruit Sheds, sorting all kinds of plums, pears and other fruits, and spent several summers labeling the boxes. After the kids were older, she worked at and retired from the Almond Growers. Deloris was very involved in her church, the First Assembly of God in Auburn, and was very strong in her beliefs, reading the bible daily and setting an example for all who knew her. She was also active in the Women's VFW Auxiliary in Auburn and the Penryn Elementary School PTA. We knew mom as a God-loving, gentle and devoted parent. She always put her family's and others needs before her own. On Sundays, she would typically put a roast or ham in the oven prior to leaving for church, and when we reached home there would be 3 – 10 Hobos from the railroad tracks at our gate. They knew as soon as we arrived home, mom would prepare each of them a sandwich, prior to finalizing our Sunday dinner. She was a fabulous cook and baked the most delicious desserts (pies, cakes, candies, etc) all from scratch. Though we are sad at her passing, we are comforted knowing she led a long and faith-filled life, helping people and loving her family. She went without suffering, but had dementia for over 10 years, that had progressively gotten worse at the end. She was always happy in the moment, with food and adventure, but didn't remember it 5 mins after. We were fortunate to have a childhood friend (Sherrie Moreno), grandchildren (Shell, Steven & Mackenzie Carter), and Jim's nephew (Matt Riley Jr) help care for Mom so that she could remain in her home for a few years, after our father passed away. She has resided with her daughter Althea and son-in-law Jim for the last 4+ years and a major part of her caregiving has come from her grandson Steven & his fiancé Shawna Nelson. Deloris is survived by her four children; Marcella Stefanick (Ken deceased), Althea Riley (Jim), Hershell Daugherty Jr. (Audrey), and Deanna Bloxham (Roy). Loving Grandmother of five granddaughters, Sherry Frazier (Lawrence deceased), Kimberly Onthank (Jeremy), Amy Bakker (Ryan), Lacey Croteau (Tom), and Angela Daugherty (Tyler), and two grandsons; Steven Riley (Shawna) and Roy Bloxham Jr. (Maribel). Deloris also leaves behind 20 great grandchildren and 12 great-great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews that she loved beyond words. She leaves behind her brother Silas Houseman and was predeceased by siblings; Clarence Houseman, Herbert Houseman, Mable Gibson, Phyllis Munster, Wilford Houseman & George Aaron Houseman. A viewing will be held Thursday, May 30, 2024 at 10:30 a.m. at the First Assembly of God Church, located at 4200 Grass Valley Hwy, Auburn, CA. The Funeral Service will begin at 11:00 am, immediately following the viewing. The Burial will be at the Newcastle Cemetery immediately after the service, 1pm, and a reception will be held following the burial service at the home of Jim Riley.
