Sunday benefit hopes to rope in a little support for Lomas' boys

Know and Go: What: Rope for Jake's Boys When: 9 a.m. Sunday Where: Lincoln Rodeo Grounds located on Highway 65 at the south end of townInformation: Bonnie Rosser at (530) 633-4890Logan and Brayden Lomas may not have their father anymore but they have a strong base of friends and family to see they grow up safe and successful.Their father, Jake Lomas, died last November at the age of 30. A benefit team roping will take place Sunday in his memory.It will be a memorial team roping because rodeo "was his love," according to Jake's mother, Sygale Lomas."It was a big part of our life with Jake, we had a rodeo family," Sygale Lomas said. "He started roping with his granddaddy when he was four-years-old."Proceeds from the memorial roping will be put into a trust fund for Logan, 3, and Brayden, 1, to use for educational support, according to Bonnie Rosser, who is in charge of the auction that'll take place that day."I knew Jake quite well and he was my son's best friend. He was here all through his life and learned how to rope and compete at the Lincoln rodeo," Rosser said. "He was a good cowboy."Admission to the event is free. Competing in the roping is $25.There will also be a barbecue, music, a live and silent auction, and a kid's area.The kids area will include a dummy roping, stick horse races and boot races."He was just a great young man and it's a great family," Rosser said. "I think it's nice to help these little guys."Jake Lomas participated in high school rodeo, and after graduating from Wheatland High School, was a judge for the high school rodeo, according to his wife, Shannon Lomas."He was involved in high school rodeo and some (rodeo) outside of high school but he's been a cowboy his entire life," Shannon Lomas said. "He loved the friends and the atmosphere that came with it, the horses, the cattle, and just being outside."Describing her husband as an outdoorsman, who loved fishing and anything to do with being outdoors, Shannon Lomas said that love for the outdoors and rodeo is something their sons have picked up.Logan, 3, enjoys watching "anyone shipping cattle," which Shannon Lomas described as anytime cattle is moved."They love it outdoors and they talk about daddy and remember daddy all the time," Shannon Lomas said. "They are just like their daddy, they have big hearts, and love for their family and their friends."Jake Lomas was "always helping people in any way he could, always giving and putting others before himself," recalled Shannon Lomas. "He was probably the most unselfish man you ever met in your life. He had the biggest heart." She had a hard time putting into words what it meant to have her husband's friends plan the memorial roping to benefit her sons but said she's "grateful and amazed at how much all of their love and support has meant to me and boys."Sygale Lomas, who lives in Oklahoma, will attend the memorial roping. She said Jake was "always making people smile.""He loved his boys, he loved his family and he's somebody I'm very proud of," Sygale Lomas said. "It's the most amazing, overwhelming gesture that all of these friends and community members are pulling together to do something in Jake's honor for my grandsons. I'm just speechless and overwhelmed with the amount of support and love that's been found," Sygale Lomas said. "Jake has some very special friends and his sons are very fortunate to have the community."
