Man drowns in Folsom Lake near Granite Bay ramp

A 37-year-old man drowned in Folsom Lake over the weekend, according to State Park Rangers. The drowning happened around 5:20 pm Saturday in an unguarded area near the Granite Bay boat ramp. People who were with the victim reportedly called authorities when he went into the water and did not come up. California State Park Rangers and South Placer Fire responded to the call, according to State Parks Ranger Barry Smith. Lifeguards and dive teams immediately searched for the victim and within 15 minutes, they found his body. "They went out and dove and recovered the body at that point," Smith reported. "Within an hour it's still a rescue, so South Placer was there and obviously they did everything they could but (he was) pronounced on scene shortly thereafter." The victim was not wearing a life vest. Ranger Smith said this story is a sad reminder of the importance of respecting the water and always putting safety first. "People come out to the lake to have a good time and unknowingly something can happen," Smith said. "People need to be cautious and realize that there's risks and take those precautions. If you're unfamiliar with the water, please, please, please wear a life jacket." There are life vests available for the public to borrow at any of the beaches on Lake Natoma or Folsom Lake. Ranger Smith said this is the second drowning at the lake this year.
