Placer fentanyl murder trial results in guilty verdict

A guilty verdict was issued by a jury Tuesday morning in a Placer County fentanyl murder trial. Carson David Schewe, 23, was found guilty of second-degree murder and two charges of possession of drugs for sale. After the murder verdict was read aloud, Rohan Beesla, representing the defendant, reached over and rubbed Schewe's shoulder in a consoling manner. Schewe pled not guilty to the charges in relation to the death of 20-year-old Kade Webb of Rocklin in December 2021. Schewe allegedly sold Webb a percocet pill laced with fentanyl that caused Webb to overdose at a Safeway near Sierra College Boulevard, according to a previous Gold Mountain California News Media article. This was the second attempt to prosecute Schewe, as the first attempt resulted in a mistrial in March due to an independent lab that conducted testing in relation to the case and failed to transmit a summary report. According to the DA's office, this is the third fentanyl-related murder conviction for Placer County and the second conviction by jury trial in the state. During the proceedings Tuesday, Schewe waived his right to a jury trial on additional aggravations and a judge will decide if additional penalties will be needed when issuing his sentence. Schewe is scheduled to be sentenced on Thursday, Dec. 5 at 8:30 a.m. in Department 3 of the Placer County Superior Court in Auburn.
