Letters to the editor: Supervisor candidate Nader thanks community

Now that the race for Placer County Supervisor for District 5 has been determined, I want to thank the many community members that actively supported and dedicated time in spreading our message throughout the district. As a result of those efforts, I received more than 19,000 votes (nearly 46 percent) from voters who were seeking more accountability and transparency in how we as a county move forward. This election has shown that a significant number of voters want a direction that truly reflects the best interests of our communities and the values of this county. To those that voted for me, I am humbled and honored for the trust you had placed in me. I am grateful and blessed by the opportunity over the last year to meet and spend time with many amazing people from all parts of the district and county. Through this election, we have started a conversation about what our county needs and the future we want to build. I would like to share a quote that I believe highlights the value of a competitive race: "Our democracy is strongest when candidates and elected officials focus on winning people over with merits of their ideas, not just by relying on the support of those who already agree with them. Politicians should compete for public support by presenting their platforms and persuading more voters. This builds broader coalitions and, ultimately, turns good ideas into good policy." I have spent more than two decades giving back to this county that I love. I will continue to advocate for what's best for our communities. This is a journey we're all on together, and I am committed to ensuring our voices are heard, our concerns are addressed, and that progress is made. Thank you again for your support, and I am excited to continue working with all of you to make Placer County an even better place to live. Wayne Nader Auburn Thanks to Auburn Salvation Army I would like to give a huge shout out to Auburn Salvation Army Officers Captain Stephen and Faith Hartt and their many outstanding volunteers for sponsoring the Thanksgiving Day Community Meal. I was sick and could not attend. My neighbor said he would go down and try to pick up some dinners for us. So, without any reservations, he was greeted by the volunteers and served the meals-to-go with a smile. Both he and I appreciate the warm community spirit rendered to us. If it wasn't for their generosity, it would be a sad day at home for me. I will make sure I reciprocate when it comes to giving at the red kettles. Richard Huntley Auburn Helping someone is 'decent thing to do' The Gathering Inn is proposing a place where Placer County people who are recovering and without a home can stay while they mend. It would be well staffed and the residents thoroughly vetted. It's not a facility for recovery from drugs. The Gathering Inn has been involved in this kind of work since 2004; they know what they are doing. Who wouldn't be happy to support something like that? Well, apparently Holly Andreatta wouldn't. But while she is very unhappy with Cliff Haggenjos ("Public shaming won't change the facts, Friday, Nov. 29, 2024, Lincoln News Messenger, page A4), her lengthy diatribe doesn't ever get to the point: There are people in various kinds of medical recovery who have no home. Didn't Jesus say something about this? "When did you see me sick? When did you notice a stranger? That was me. However you treated the least of these, you did it to me." There is more, the words of Jesus at the Final Sorting Out: "Get away from me, you cursed people ... into the eternal fire … for I was a stranger and you didn't invite me in … I was sick and you didn't look after me." And he said again, "Whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me." We avoid Matthew 25:31-46, but there it is. Besides, wouldn't you just like to help someone who needs a place for shelter and recovery? And whether you are a Jesus follower or not, it's just the decent thing to do. Charlotte CooperLincoln
