Henry "Hank" Gonzales 7/12/1931 - 12/6/2024

Auburn, CA - Long-time Auburn resident and active community member, Henry "Hank" Gonzales, passed away peacefully at home on Friday, December 6, 2024, surrounded by his loving family. Born to Pedro and Marina Gonzales in Phoenix, AZ, Hank was the youngest of five children. Hank served in the U.S. Army from July 1950 to July 1953, with time in Korea from mid-1952 to mid-1953 with the 25th Infantry Signal Company headquarters. After his honorable discharge, he pursued education at the Don Martin School of Radio and TV in Hollywood, CA. His journey led him to Yreka, Northern California, and eventually to Auburn in 1963 where he worked at KAHI radio. He went onto become general manager at KPOP in Roseville and eventually, an executive at Fuller Jeffery Broadcasting. At 93, Hank never lost his youthful spirit or his engaging smile. Known for his "knows no stranger" attitude, he served the Auburn community with distinction, including two terms as Mayor in 1973 and 1978. Hank was a dedicated parishioner at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, where he attended mass every weekend for decades. His community involvement was extensive; he was an active member of The Elks, The Lions Club, The Rotary, and the 20-30 Club. Hank also enjoyed his time at The Tahoe Club, playing dice, and socializing. An avid runner, he was a familiar figure jogging around Auburn's hills well into his 70s. He was also a volunteer for the Tevis Cup and a founding member of "The Derelicts," a group known for their annual fishing escapades. In 1988, Governor George Deukmejian appointed Hank to the California State Fair Board where he served for four years as a member. Hank co-owned the California Club, was a realtor, and with his wife Glenda, played a pivotal role in the renovation of the State Theater and the preservation of the Auburn Courthouse. Their love for travel took them around the world, often with friends and family. Hank's commitment to service extended globally when he joined the Board of Directors for Friends of Vinh Son Orphanage in 2005, making several trips to Vietnam to support the cause. After a 44-year career in radio broadcasting, Hank retired, leaving behind a legacy of service and warmth. He is survived by his loving wife, Glenda, daughters Marianne Gonzales Sims, Linda Oliver, and Kathryn Gonzales, five grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.Funeral Services; Friday, Dec. 20th; Rosary: 10:30 AM; Mass: 11:00 AM at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 1162 Lincoln Way, Auburn; a family only private burial, and reception following the service at St Teresa of Avila, 11600 Atwood Rd, Auburn. Hank's life was a testament to love, family, community, and service. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered for his kindness, humor, and the joy he brought to so many lives.
