Del Oro, Rocklin split doubleheader

The first week of Sierra Foothill League play is in the books and as it does every year, the week wrapped up Friday night with a boys and girls basketball doubleheader. Friday's action saw longtime rivals Rocklin and Del Oro square off at Rocklin High School with both schools expecting to field strong teams in both sports. Del Oro and Rocklin split the doubleheader, with the Lady Eagles picking up a key win and the Thunder boys bouncing back from their first league loss with a decisive win. Boys basketball Rocklin 81, Del Oro 62: After a tough week in San Diego and start to league play, the Thunder are regaining their balance with back-to-back wins over Oak Ridge and Del Oro. The Thunder took control early and never looked back Friday night, downing their rivals decisively to improve to 2-1 in league play. Senior Mark Lavrenov scored 18 of his game-high 31 points in the first half to help the Thunder strike down the Golden Eagles. Lavrenov was dominant on the glass with 14 rebounds. Josiah Andrews scored 25 points for the Thunder. Del Oro showed some fight in the third quarter, cutting into its 28-point halftime deficit. Hayden Yarnes and Luke Galer each scored 13 points for the Golden Eagles. Del Oro looks to snap its three-game winning streak Wednesday at home against Folsom. Girls basketball Del Oro 46, Rocklin 35: Defense has reigned supreme for Del Oro, which totaled 18 steals in an 11-point victory over Rocklin. Del Oro suffocated the Thunder with its full-court press, making it difficult for Rocklin to even cross center court and when they did, the lockdown defense didn't stop. Senior Payton Hyde had eight steals in the win to go with six rebounds and nine points. Bianca Slone led Rocklin with 21 points. The Lady Eagles followed with a 55-42 victory over McNair of Stockton on Saturday, holding McNair to five points in the fourth quarter. Del Oro is 2-1 in SFL play with its lone loss to Whitney.
