Sanctuary throwing party for retiring horse, 40

A big celebration for Comet is taking place Saturday. Horses' Honor Senior Horse Sanctuary is having an open house and retirement party for the 40-year-old quarterhorse from 11 a.m. until 2 p.m. The sanctuary for elderly horses is located at 6600 Garden Bar Road in Lincoln, the Horses Honor has a tack store in Auburn. Comet worked as a lesson horse until he came to the sanctuary on Thanksgiving Day. He has taught hundreds of people to ride and is beloved. "He was still in service until he came to us," said Niña Thompson, who is the founder of Horses' Honor. Former students of Comet are highly encouraged to attend his party. Comet will have carrot cake, apples and a massage. There will also be horse body work demonstrations. "We plan to make quite a fuss over him," Thompson said. There will be refreshments. According to Thompson, there are 27 seniors at the sanctuary and the horses stay there for life. "The ranch is beautiful, and the horses look great," Thompson said.
