Folsom High wins SFL tournament

Folsom High's female wrestlers all placed in the top-three in their weight classes at the Sierra Foothill League tournament held Friday. Pia Hill won the 100-pound weight class, while Jalissa Lopez (105), Annika Scott (120) and Wanda Spicer (170) placed second while Peyton Ollinger (125) placed third. All five girls will move on to the North Regional Tournament at Foothill High School this weekend. At the junior varsity level, Leanna Remington took first in the 100-pound weight class, while Violet Webster placed first in the 120-125-pound weight class. Bianca Scott (110-120) and Naomi McCarty (120-125) took second place, while Alexia Mauer (100-105) and Keagan Brown (110-120) placed third. At the varsity level, the Bulldog boys showed its dominance by placing a finalist in each of the first 10 weight classes, as the Bulldogs had the most finalists (10) champions (five) and qualifiers (14) for this weekend's Division I Section Championships at Pleasant Grove. Folsom won the tournament with 243.5 points, finishing in front of Del Oro's 228 points. Folsom's five league champions were Mas Hatano (106), Orion Hill (132), Ryland Smith (150), Preston McAninch (157) and Kayden Hoang (165). Hatano won his fourth straight league title (two at the JV level and two at varsity) by defeating Del Oro's Declan Leonard, 4-2. Hill (132) pinned Del Oro's Kameron Rush in 35 seconds to win the title at 132. Smith defeated Del Oro's Chase Young, 8-2, to win the title at 150, while McAninch pinned Oak Ridge's Bryce Birkett in 1:34 to win at 157. Hoang also beat Jesuit's Xavier Pizano to win the title at 165. Folsom had five other wrestlers make the finals, but all lost by decision to state-ranked opponents to finish in second place in their respective weight classes. Second-place finishers included Ken Fernandez (113), Anthony Cruz (12), Kai Yi Berg (126), Nicholas Spotswood (138) and Matt Loftis (144). Folsom High's Nathan Urbani (175) and Chid Mmagu (190) both earned third-place finishes to qualify, while Connor Stoneman (215) will be an alternate and Chris Rodriguez (285) placed fifth. Folsom will have all 14 weight classes represented on the boys' side, and five varsity girls competing at their regional where all are trying to finish in the top-eight to qualify for the Sac-Joaquin Masters meet the following weekend. Folsom High's junior varsity also won the league championship, outscoring Del Oro 314 to 310. Folsom's junior varsity league champions included Sadhruk Nagineni (113), Max Wong (126), Phuc Nguyen (150), Zach Bernardo (157), and Colin Graham (215). Other JV medalists consisted of Logan Hara (132), Gabe Olveda (138), Hayden Barton (150), Tegan Smith-Jones (157), and Logan Ross (165).
