Colfax opens baseball season with 2 wins; DO splits

As the weather begins to turn in the foothills, high school baseball season is getting underway. There was enough break in the storms throughout the week for Del Oro and Colfax to begin play, while Bear River had to reschedule its opener due to rain. Colfax wins two: The Falcons defeated Union Mine 3-0 on Feb. 11 and Nevada Union 7-5 on Wednesday. In Wednesday's victory, Colfax got its bats going early with three runs in the top of the first inning, but Nevada Union answered with two in the bottom frame. The Falcons added another run in the second, but the Miners took the lead in the third with three runs. Colfax responded with another three spot in the top of the fourth to round out the scoring. Garrett Lewis collected three hits and drove in two runs for the Falcons, while Tyler McCabe had two hits and four RBIs. Lewis also pitched three innings and struck out six. Through two games, the Falcons have four hitters batting .500 or better. Lewis and McCabe have accounted for seven of the Falcons' 10 RBIs. Colfax was scheduled to play at Rosemont on Friday. Del Oro splits: A five-run fourth inning was the difference for the Golden Eagles in Tuesday's 5-2 victory over West Park in Loomis. Sophomore Nico Busalacchi had a two-RBI double, and Crosby Pilgrim and Jayden Santiago had run-scoring singles. Masen Belding hit a sacrifice fly. Broc McReynolds and Anthony Clay split the pitching duties for the Golden Eagles. McReynolds threw three innings and allowed two runs on three hits while walking six and striking out one. Clay threw two shutout innings and allowed one hit while walking one. Del Oro is now 1-1 after dropping its opener to Woodcreek. The Golden Eagles begin a six-game trip Saturday at Danville-Monte Vista. Del Oro's next home game is March 8 against Vanden. Season openers: Three area teams are slated to begin their seasons next week. Bear River is scheduled to host Union Mine on Friday. Placer is scheduled to play Merced-El Capitan and Modesto-Enochs on Feb. 28. Foresthill will play host to Ponderosa on Feb. 25.
