Woodcreek takes 4 of 5 games in Reno

Woodcreek's softball team had quite a weekend at Reno. Playing in the Reed Tournament, the Timberwolves won four games and reached the championship game which they lost to host Reed, 8-2. Never mind the loss to Reed, Woodcreek won three games on Friday with three different pitchers and two of those pitchers had yet to throw a varsity pitch this season. "The best thing about this tournament is when we left for it we had one pitcher and when we got home we had three and possibly four pitchers," Woodcreek coach Gary Ybarra said. "Our second pitcher Chloe Schmidt-Wolf has been out injured for two weeks and we don't know how long she's going to be out. So going into the tournament, we were nervous as to what or who we were going to have for pitching. "We had one girl, senior Nicole Fonti, who hadn't pitched since she was a freshman, and another girl, Emily Cser, who hadn't pitched for two years and a freshman, Kendall Pierce, who hadn't thrown yet this season. We threw her into the fire and she pitched well. Everyone stepped up and pitched great." Also throwing well was the Timberwolves main starter, Maryn MacNeil, who pitched the team to wins over Heritage, 13-1 and Spanish Springs, 12-4. Cser threw against McQueen and won the game, 8-2, while Pierce and Fonti threw in the 13-7 win over Damonte Ranch. Cser and Pierce threw in the 8-2 loss to Reed, who improved to 11-3-2 with the win. It wasn't just the pitching that was good this weekend, as the Timberwolves scored 42 points in five games, including three games in which they reached double digits. MacNeil had six hits and 10 RBIs in Reno, and also hit two home runs, and had a double and a triple. Nicole Fonti had seven hits and scored eight runs. Aubrey Reddell scored six runs, had six hits including a home run and drove in eight runs. Chloe Preuss scored five runs, had five hits and drove in three runs. Darcy Miller scored five runs, drove in five and had six hits, including a home run. Payton Green had six hits, while Amelia Enright scored six runs and Cser hit a home run. "The team hit .433 during the tournament," Ybarra said. "One of the girls' from Spanish Springs asked my assistant coach what we are feeding our girls because every girl can it. "The team played really well." Woodcreek, 12-4 overall, has three games on the schedule for this week: home against Roseville on Monday, at Ponderosa on Wednesday and home against East Nicolaus on Thursday.
