Vista volleyball rolling along as Woodcreek match looms

Vista del Lago's varsity boys' volleyball team continues to play good volleyball as they work their way through Capital Valley Conference play. On Monday night between the strong hitting from outside hitters Josh Chitrapu and Sunny Sah, the Eagles took care of Christian Brothers in three straight games, 27-25, 25-18, and 25-17. The win improved the Eagles record to 7-1 in the conference, keeping them tied with Woodcreek, who they play on the road next Monday in a game that will likely decide the league champion. Vista has a 3-2 win over the Timberwolves coming at Vista on March 12. The Eagles overall record is 21-5. Vista did get off to a bit of a slow start in the first game, trailing 14-11 before scoring three straight points to tie the score. The game was back and forth from there with the Falcons taking a 23-22 lead. Vista scored two straight to go on top 24-23 before the Falcons tied the game at 24. Vista took a 25-24 before the Falcons tied it up again one final time before the Eagles scored the next two points to win the game. After that, Vista played pretty well and didn't let the Falcons into the match. "In spots, we played to a new potential, but we couldn't maintain that," Vista coach James Fanshier said. "We had a little bit of a lack of focus, which has been a problem a couple times this season. We had a lot of unforced errors in the first game. "Josh played well after the first game and same thing with Sunny; it took them a couple reps before they found their groove." Chitrapu led the Eagles with 15 kills, while Sah had eight and Jack Thionnet made six. The Eagles were coming off a third-place finish in the Stockton Tournament over the weekend, where they avenged an earlier loss to Monterey Trail by beating them in the match for third place. The Eagles continue to build momentum for the playoffs. "We still have Matt (Francesconi) out, who's a good player and team captain," Fanshier said. "Other than that, we're cleaning up our offense. We're talking about having trust in each other and in the coaching staff and that's my wish for the rest of the season." Vista plays at Woodcreek on Monday.
