First Congregational Church of Auburn celebrates 150 years of faith, community giving

Founded in 1875, First Congregational Church of Auburn (FCCA), affectionately known as the "Church on the Hill," marked its 150th anniversary with a joyful celebration on Sunday, May 4. Originally located on High Street, the church moved to its current location on Auburn Ravine Road in 1962 and has stood as a beacon of faith and community involvement for generations, evolving alongside the city of Auburn while maintaining its commitment to spiritual service and outreach. Sunday's festivities began with a special service led by Rev. Dan Spacek, who has faithfully served the congregation for 13 years – making him the longest-tenured pastor in the church's storied history. Following the service, the congregation unveiled a milestone initiative: "$150k for 150 Years," a charitable campaign commemorating the church's legacy of generosity. Established in 2024, the FCCA Charitable Trust will provide ongoing annual support to local nonprofits. To launch the initiative, the church awarded $150,000 total to seven organizations serving the Auburn community: Auburn Interfaith Food Closet, Boys & Girls Club of Placer County, Stand Up Placer, Placer High School Music, Jane Roach Memorial & Scholarship, Acres of Hope, Auburn Symphony and PFLAG Auburn Chapter. A special moment during the event was the presentation of the inaugural Jane Roach Memorial Scholarship to Carlos Serrano, a music student and lifelong member of FCCA who had a close relationship with the scholarship's namesake. Nearly 200 people attended a celebratory luncheon, which featured a theatrical performance humorously recounting the church's 150-year history. The cast, dressed in historical costumes, entertained guests with a lighthearted yet heartfelt portrayal of the church's evolution. Emceed by Bruce Quick, the event also included the burial of a time capsule prepared by FCCA's youth group, set to be opened in 25 years. The occasion was further highlighted by the presence of MeLinda LaViene of the Northern California Nevada Conference of the United Church of Christ, and a stirring blessing delivered by Rev. Dr. Davena Creer-Jones. With deep roots in Auburn and a forward-looking mission of service and inclusion, First Congregational Church of Auburn is poised to continue its legacy well into the future.
