Roseville pitcher whiffs 12, outduels El Dorado Hills hurler in Major TOC win

In a classic pitcher's duel, Roseville's Brady Wilson, a crafty left-hander, was up against a hard-throwing righty in George Bergamo of El Dorado Hills on Tuesday night at Deputy Jeff Mitchell Park in El Dorado Hills. In the Major TOC Tournament game in which Roseville won 4-2 in seven innings, Wilson threw 6 1/3 innings and allowed only one hit, struck out 12, hit one batter and walked one. Bergamo pitched seven innings and allowed four runs on four hits, one intentional walk and struck out 16, at one point striking out nine in a row. Through six innings, Bergamo had allowed only one run in a 1-1 tie, but Roseville scored three runs in the top of the seventh. With a runner starting on second base, Bergamo began the inning with a strikeout. He then uncorked a wild pitch which allowed Kash Enriquez to advance to third. El Dorado Hills coach Seth Sznapstajler decided to intentionally walk Wilson, who doubled in his previous at-bat. Wilson stole second to put runners on second and third before Brody Topo hit a ground ball to third baseman Graham Doris, who threw to second base, which allowed Enriquez to score the go-ahead run. After Bergamo recorded the second out with his 15th strikeout, Zeek Velasco hit a two-run single that hit the edge of the grass and took a lucky bounce over the bag at third to put Roseville in front 4-1. In the bottom of the seventh, El Dorado Hills got a run back when Bergamo doubled to the fence in left-center field to drive in Beckham Hyde, but relief pitcher Caden Eason got the last two outs to end it. Both teams scored a run in the first inning. Enriquez singled and scored on an error for Roseville. El Dorado Hills' run came when Colton Cagle was hit by a pitch, advanced to second on a wild pitch and scored on Bergamo's double. "Brady pitched really well," Roseville manager Dan Wilson said. "He was spotting his knuckleball; that was working really well. He was hitting his fastball early in the count and his curve ball … everything was rolling for him." It wasn't a great night offensively for Roseville, as Bergamo was dealing, but they managed to squeeze out three runs in the seventh inning. "That little hop over third base, we will thank the baseball gods for that one," Wilson said. "We will take those little fair balls. They don't have to be hard, but they have to be well placed." Roseville advances in the tournament to play the Cosumnes Phillies at 5 p.m. Friday. "It's all bonus baseball now," Wilson said of his team, the No. 2 team from Roseville in the tournament. "Everything else from here on out is a gift. We get to keep playing and stay together. This was wonderfully unexpected because their kid was throwing really well. His tempo was on and I don't think he ever got to a three-ball count."
