Roseville hosts grand reopening of historic Johnson Pool on Saturday, June 14

The community is invited to come celebrate the grand reopening of historic, 100-year-old Johnson Pool in Roseville on Saturday, June 14. Join Roseville staff for a fresh new look at the pool reboot from 1-4 p.m. Saturday. The city of Roseville has finished a $5 million restoration of the historic complex, located at Vernon and D streets in the Cherry Glen/Theils Manor neighborhood. There will be a free swim, giveaways, crafts and games. Staff will unveil exciting improvements like a zero-depth beach entry pool, expanded deck, shaded picnic area, renovated restrooms and enhanced accessibility. Built during the President Warren G. Harding Administration, David R. Johnson Pool was called a "Swim Bath" in 1921. Hosting generations of Roseville swimmers, the pool is on a half-acre next to the train tracks. The city has operated the historic facility since the 1960s, staff said. Roseville's first public pool, the facility was originally owned by the railroad and closely tied with the Pacific Fruit Express ice plant across the tracks. The plant produced blocks of ice for railroad car produce to ship across the nation. The ice plant connected a pipe supplying 150,000 gallons of water to fill the pool each day, according to archives. Before pumps and chlorine, each night a lifeguard would drain the pool and the untreated water was emptied into Dry Creek. The city wants to maintain the facility as a teaching pool, ensuring residents are water-safe by learning to swim. The city operates three public pools: Roseville Aquatics, Johnson Pool and Mike Shellito Indoor Pool. Roughly 450,000 people swim at the facilities each year, staff said. Each pool is unique, and Roseville offers many swim programs for young and old throughout the year. Check the city website for various swim classes and schedules.
