Browning teaches quarterbacks the finer things

Jake Browning returned to Folsom last weekend to hold two free camps. The first, the Sac Town 10 on Friday, was for 10 of the top quarterbacks in the Sacramento area. Unfortunately, there were several no shows but all total seven quarterbacks were there; Sac High's Laron James-Radcliffe and three from Folsom High, Matteo Gonzalez, Carson Murphy and Stanley Newton, and three from Vista del Lago, Jacoby More, Christian Chavez and Cael Rens. Before the camp started, Browning, the Cincinnati Bengals back-up quarterback and 2015 Folsom High graduate, addressed the quarterbacks. "I'm just here to give you guys information that helped me when I was in high school," Browning said. "You are already good players; I'm here to help you with things that will help get your game to the next level. You guys already know how to throw an out route; we're going to go through the details of how to be efficient and focus on higher detail." For the next two hours, Browning, with the help of Folsom High football coach Paul Doherty, took the quarterbacks through several drills which focused primarily on technique. From proper footwork, getting their body into the proper throwing position and from there throwing the ball properly, Browning focused on minute details that high school kids don't learn and don't know or don't even think about. "It's a cool experience," More said, a sophomore at Vista del Lago. "It's fun to have Jake here teaching us and helping us to throw better balls." Said Laron James-Radcliffe from Sac High, a two-year starter heading into his junior season, "This is a great experience. There is a lot to learn they're teaching a lot." Folsom High's Carson Murphy also enjoyed the camp. "I think it's great," Murphy said. "It's a cool experience to get out here in front of Jake and other coaches. The big thing is to be out here with other competitors my age and compete, because I feel you learn when you're competing and I really like it." After all the drills, Browning explained to the quarterbacks how to utilize the information they were given. "I'd write down everything you learned and I'd pick one or two things that you can improve on because you're not going to get better at 20 things, but you can get better at one or two," Browning said. "Then you put together a plan of how I'm going to improve in these areas with some good habits. Such as, before I go throw with my receivers, I'm going to do this little drill or that little drill." Browning finished up the camp in the locker room with a film session, showing clips of him with the Bengals and talking about what to look for from the alignment of defenses, how he to react with what they showed and then he showed the successful, and in some cases, unsuccessful play. He was teaching the quarterbacks what to look for from the defense and how to react through progressions and how to choose which receiver to throw to.
