2000: 5 Cities all-stars third in Cordova softball tournament

25 years ago June 29, 2000 The Burgers and Boots Roundup fundraiser for the Loomis Basin Heritage Foundation was enjoyed by many. Serving chili were Gigg Powers, Loomis School District Superintendent, and Bert Braun of the Cowpoke Feed Store. Enjoying the food included Barbara and Frank Nichols, Tony and Dot Shiro, Bob Hansen, Ed Horton, Fusae Miyamura and Helen Francis. Ana Rosa (Echelmeier) Cherry, a 1985 Del Oro High School graduate, completed her residency in Family Medicine at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center. Former baseball players who would qualify as role models for kids included Stan "The Man" Musial, who in 22 years with the St. Louis Cardinals never once popped off to an umpire. And, of course, Jackie Robinson, who broke the sport's race barrier. The Five Cities Minor All-Star softball team competed in the Stars of Cordova Girls Fastpitch Tournament. Players were Katherine Lohr, Katie Wilkerson, Jocey Cartright, Janelle Hacker, Nicole De Croix, Hali Coppin, Megan Marci, Caroline Reissenweber, Sami Gray, Tara Green, Kelly Allendale, Mary Lovell and Stephanie Konen. The team defeated the host Cordova team 13-5 to earn third place in the tournament. Del Oro High School student Jordan Bailey would be joining fellow U-16 San Juan Storm soccer players traveling to Europe. The club would be competing in the Italy Cup. The boys will travel to Amsterdam and Germany as well. The Blue Anchor Courtyard in Loomis was the site of a light summer comedy performed by members of the Motherlode Stage Company. Set in San Francisco in 1890, "Reilly and the 400" followed an Irish pawnbroker's plan to thwart the plans of the elite "Blue Ribbon 400" and their snobby rich ways. 50 years ago June 26, 1975 The walls crumbled as the old Loomis School was taken down. It was like the passing of an old friend. People rummaged through the ruins like birds of prey, driving off with prized pieces of architecture and bricks. Highway Patrolman Frank Rowley of Loomis along with Firemen Mike McKenzie risked their lives in an attempt to rescue a youth trapped between rocks in the American River. Unfortunately, water had been released upstream and the water level rose with the youth unable to be saved. The new Miner's Ravine 4-H officers were Sandy Rathbone, Bill Fullerton, Julie Pingree and Sheryl Fullerton. Congratulations to Miss Susan Drennon of Loomis on her Master of Arts in Education degree from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo. Children gathered around Jesse Helms in the Loomis Library to hear a story. Jesse and the youngsters listened to a story read in English and Japanese by Mrs. Tameniklahn. Walden West Summer Day Camp was located at the Folsom Lake Horse Center. Young people could explore and develop interest in the arts including batik, puppetry, ceramics, sand casting and more. The Cub Scouts of the Loomis Basin held a play day with Penryn's Pack 180 winning the attendance award. Bill Klinger won the bag race. In other Cub Scout news, Aaron Swickard won the Pinewood Derby held at Royer Park. The South Loomis Quickstep Band just returned from the National Fiddle Championships in Weiser, Idaho, and prepared for an appearance on KCRA's "7:30" program. The local country-western musicians were Allen Hendricks, Ted Smith, Taylor Carey and Bob Bonner. 75 years ago May 1949 Steven Doll, 7-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Doll of Loomis, collided with a Jeep station wagon on Main Street and was seriously bruised. It seemed Steven was playing by the Loomis Food Center and darted out into the street. He was taken to Dr. Barnes and then to the Auburn Hospital. Howard Myers of Loomis returned from Phoenix, Arizona, where he was called due to the death of his son, Howard Luis Myers. The 10-year-old boy drowned. Mrs. Edna Moulton was honored for her long years of devoted service as she retired from teaching. Also honored by the Loomis PTA and Teachers Association was Mrs. George Evans (nee Miss Pearl Smith). The fire department was called out to a brush fire in the Loomis "Jungles" and quickly brought under control. Season standard certificates would be given to those fruit inspectors who pass the examinations. Successful candidates would inspect deciduous fruits in Placer County. Playing in the theaters was "Canadian Pacific," starring Randolph Scott. During the Music Hour presented by Loomis School musicians, Thelma Robinson's saxophone solo was "A Tree in the Meadow." The Glee Club presented numbers comparable to older and more experienced choral groups. Especially well received were their renditions of "Shortnin Bread" and "Comin Thru the Rye." Outstanding numbers by the orchestra were "Step and Glide" and "Parade of the Puppets." Standing Guard - oral histories: Susan Hiromoto (Goto) was just 10 years old when her family was evacuated from their farm in Clarksburg in February 1942. The first stop was an assembly center in Turlock at the county fairgrounds. "We were living in horse stalls. As kids ... we knew all the patriotic songs. We were just American kids."
