1949: 'Hangtown Fry' on menu for Gold Rush Centennial Days

25 years ago July 6, 2000 Ryan Fuhrman, a 1999 Del Oro graduate, was accepted as a member into the National Society of Collegiate Scholars. Founded in l1994, NSCS recognized undergraduate students who excel academically. Roseville Kiwanis Club donated a playhouse for the Children's Crisis Nursery to be opened next spring by the Child Abuse Prevention Council, which was established in 1988 devoted to preventing and healing child abuse in all its forms. On hand for the donation ceremony were Carol Garcia, president of the CAPC, Kathy Van Earp and Marilyn Festersen of the Roseville Kiwanis Club, and Rich Colwell, president-elect of the CAPC. The Crocker Art Museum in Sacramento exhibited the works of Ansel Adams (1902-1984). His images celebrated the vast spaces of the American West. Largely a self-taught photographer, he was born in San Francisco and after a visit to Yosemite National Park as a teenager he returned every year for the rest of his life. One of his photographs on display was not an epic vista but a portrait of Georgia O'Keeffe along with Orville Cox. Kathy Dombrowski and Lin Packard helped with a Classical Horsemanship Clinic sponsored by the Loomis Basin Horsemen's Association. Colleen Garcia, classical riding instructor and competitor, will demonstrate the concept of classical horsemanship. Old schoolhouses of the Loomis Basin researched by the Loomis Basin Historical Society and written Wes Naylor. One of the early schools was called Pine Grove and located near Secret Ravine Creek. It was constructed in 1856 on the Grant property near what is now the intersection of Brace and Barton roads. Miss Mary Powner taught in the first school where there were 85 children, 4-18 years old, living in the district. In 1862, the town changed its name to Smithville and so did the school. A second school was erected on the property located between Brace and Horseshoe Bar roads, just north of the present day Methodist Church. (continued) 50 years ago July 3, 1975 Funeral services were held for George Norman Moore, 80, a native of Missouri and a resident of the Loomis area for 10 years. He was a retired watchmaker. The Vietnamese refugees housed at Weimar's Hope Village were looking for a new home as their rent would run out in late August. They were sponsored by Food For the Hungry. Long-distance bicyclist Bill Dean of Loomis planned a cross-country ride to Canada. During the Hidden Valley 4-H awards picnic, third-year pins were presented to Troyia Smith, Marta Gillespie and Paul Clark. Fourth-year pins went to Kristin Smith, fifth year Ginny Vollmar, sixth year Robbie Hanson and ninth year Becky Hanson, who was honored for her service to the club. The 1975 Placer County 4-H All-Stars were Ron Durham of Rocklin 4-H, Lorraine Field of Dry Creek, Nancy Loudon of Long Valley, and Sandy Rathbone and Bill Fullerton of Miners Ravine. Mr. and Mrs. Ben Martin bought the Loomis News. The couple from Penryn also owned the Lincoln News Messenger and are part-owners of the Press Tribune in Roseville. Craig Jarvis would remain as editor and Joyce Marsh as advertising salesperson. Severe damage was done by a fire to the home of Herbert Ramsey on Val Verde Road in Loomis. Among the young people enjoying riding at the Folsom Lake Horse Center was Suzie Eckard of Loomis on "Prince." Yesteryear, by Vivian Rasmussen: In 1924, the community turned out with tractors and horse-drawn scrapers to build a baseball diamond along with a grandstand on the Loomis School grounds. The first team included Ted Gordon, Troy Barr, Rosco Schuler, Otto Bischoff, Hjalmer Alexson, Jimmy Brennan, Bill Coten, Vince Horton, Lorry Hendrickson, Harold Siever, Ed Horton, Al Fieser, Barton Smyth (mascot) and Fenn Laird (manager). 75 years ago May 1949 Funeral services were held for Mrs. Lillie C. Scribner, 79. A native of Illinois, she lived in Rocklin for the past 56 years. Lillie was a graduate of San Jose State College and a charter member of the Rocklin Women's Club. She was the widow of the late B.N. Scribner, a Rocklin businessman. Placer Junior College President Harold Weaver will be the speaker for the Loomis Union Elementary School graduation services. Trustee Harold Fischer will present diplomas to the 52 graduates. The state will issue checks to the aged and blind in 10 counties, including Placer. The state warrants would be written by modern high-speed methods on punched cards and mailed directly to those eligible. Miss Adams' Loomis School class visited the Deer Creek Lumber Co. mill. The manager, Mr. Gieck, explained the operation including the machine that blows the saw dust into the burners and how knives instead of saws cut moldings. The Gold Rush Centennial Days will feature the tasty "Hangtown Fry" in El Dorado County dining places. The Fry consisted of oysters, eggs and bacon. The concoction became famous starting with a weary old '49er walking into Placerville's Cary House with his poke filled with nuggets. "Give me the best meal in the house," he demanded. Seeing the most expensive item on the menu was oysters and eggs, he said, "Fry me plenty of both and throw in some bacon." Standing Guard - oral histories: Roy Uyeda was born on English Colony Road in Loomis, where his family operated a strawberry farm. In 1941, Roy enlisted in the Army Air Corps. One month later, the war broke out and Roy was put in prison. In 1943, he was "kicked out of the Air Corps" and joined the 442nd Regimental Combat Team and sent to fight in Europe.
