100 years ago: Mother warns about whooping cough, measles

100 years ago Population 1,324 (U.S. Census 1900, 1910, and 1920) Contagions: The News-Messenger is in receipt of a letter written by the mother of a few months' old baby in regard to letting children go about town, the swimming pool and play grounds who are affected with whooping cough and measles. The lady is very sincere in her caustic remarks, and we agree with her on every point at issue in her letter. She relates instances which, in fact, are true. The lady in question wants a health officer who can and will attend to business. She criticizes parents for giving children their freedom during affectation of disease. The lady's remarks are worthy of consideration. Be careful of contagious diseases. City ordinances: Blacksmithing: For the business of horseshoeing, wagon repairing, or general blacksmithing, there must be paid a license tax of $1.50 per quarter. Lunch stands, etc.: Every person owning, managing or operating an open unenclosed lunch stand, or a conveyance, machine or contrivance of any kind, situated or located upon or operated along, the public streets, alleys or sidewalks of the town, and in, on, or from which, is sold or offered for sale, popcorn, peanuts, candies, ice cream, sandwiches, weinerwursts, or any minor refreshment or edible of like nature, must pay a license tax of $1.50 per quarter for each stand, conveyance, machine or contrivance so owned, operated or managed. Aeroplanes: The proprietor, manager or operator of any aeroplane, or flying machine engaged in the business of carrying or transporting passengers for hire, where the starting point of the trip or service of such aeroplane or flying machine is within the corporate limits of the Town of Lincoln, must pay a license tax of $5.00 per day. Note: Demas' Department Store was located in the Emmada Building from 1928-1991. 75 years ago Population 2,410 (U.S. Census 1940 and 1950) More from the Annals of Lincoln by W.J.D., written at the turn of the 20th century: Below the railroad bridge on the ravine was the ranch of Cornelius Quinn that he had purchased from Wyman. Below that was the ranch of Wm. Davis, acquired from the same grantor in part and the other half from John M. Strong. Then came the ranch of Smith Worden. He was a man of superior education and had an attractive collection of books. Years later, he sold out to Ragsdale and went home to New York. Ragsdale sold to Boyden. Two brothers, Hart and Joshua Reeves, owned the ranch below Hollis Newton and George G. Sewell. They were in partnership in the farm next below, but they afterwards divided the land. Sewell was elected County Clerk and sold out to A.S. Niles, who in turn sold to Newton. Amos F. Gove, who had been a merchant in Auburn, owned the next ranch and he sold to Richard Fuller, whose home place was adjoining down the creek. In early days, Fuller conducted a public house on his ranch on the Sacramento and Marysville Road. He was a New Yorker and like President Garfield, had served an apprenticeship in his youth as a tow driver on a canal boat. He arrived in California in October 1849, with the hardy Argonauts that laid the foundation stones of this great commonwealth on the Pacific. He was a tall, powerful man, whole-souled in his treatment to his fellow man, but one who would not tolerate deception. Once in Sacramento, a sharper undertook to take him in, but Fuller landed him with a blow such as a man of his strength could deliver. (Mrs. Ahart notes the following: R. Fuller was the grandfather of Etta Leavell, who shared with me the Annals, and Mabel Fuller. His wife, Ann Fuller, owned a hotel and hall with an open-air platform on G Street. All were destroyed by fire many years ago. An old stage barn was located on the corner of 4th and D Streets where the home of his granddaughter, Mabel Fuller, is now located. Miss Fuller has in her possession a most interesting, unique deed in which the California Stage Company deeds the property to Richard Fuller, July 24, 1866. The Seal imprint shows a stage coach drawn by six horses with trees in the background.) Note: Miss Mabel Fuller's home at the corner of D Street & McBean Park Drive, formerly 4th Street, still stands. Fuller-Leavell descendants remain residents of Lincoln. Back from the creek and to the south were the locations of Thomas Orchard and Wharton, who sold to Mahlon Walden, Jonathan Speaker, Chris and John Crook, Hans Anderson and Johnson. Between the Auburn Ravine and Doty's Ravine were the farms of Purcell, Thomas Brown, J.D.B. Cook, Warren D. Heaton, Kidd and Charles W. Graves. A.J. Soule owned a ranch south of Virginiatown and afterwards bought a place on the road to Manzanita Grove. This property was afterwards owned by Peter Ahart and by Henry W. Ahart. At Manzanita Grove, about five miles north of Lincoln, a burial ground was established as early as 1854. There was a school house at the grove also. (More about Manzanita Grove later.) Lincoln School District was organized in 1860. The first teacher was Peter Singer. In 1862, the census showed 29 boys and 35 girls in the district between 4 and 18 years of age. Note: This article was written by Mrs. Mabel Ahart. 50 years ago Population 3,179 (U.S. Census 1960 and 1970) City Council: The council conducted the first hearing of the sewer connection and service fee ordinance. Basic unit fee established by the ordinance would be $6.50 per unit each month while the connection fee would be $400 with an increase of $25 each July 1 until 1984, when the connection costs $525 per unit. Voted 3-1 to approve the resolution for public condemnation proceedings for land at the proposed sewer plant site. The on-again, off-again annexation of some 671 acres west of the present Lincon city limits is apparently on again due to council action Tuesday night. In a 3-1 vote, the council approved proceeding with the annexation resolution through the Local Area Formation Commission. By the same vote, the council also adopted a resolution declaring a negative impact on the environment. The property being considered for annexation lies between Nelson Lane and the city limits and has a northern boundary of Nicolaus Road and a southern boundary of Moore Road.
