Its almost Go Time - fireworks stands ready for business this weekend!

The festive sights and symbols of the Independence Day holiday are already popping up in Folsom, with the arrival of booths selling Safe and Sane fireworks! On Saturday, June 28 at noon, Safe and Sane fireworks stands officially open for business in Folsom, kicking off the week leading up to this year's Independence Day Holiday. The stands will remain open until the July 4 holiday. Each year, the Folsom Fire Department holds a lottery to pick who gets to host a fireworks stand. For some, getting a lottery pick is not unlike winning a "golden ticket", as the fireworks stand serves as a huge fundraiser for local nonprofits and other organizations. With Independence Day celebrations planned for Friday, Folsom city officials are reminding the community to prioritize safety, with a reminder that they take illegal fireworks extremely seriously. The Folsom City Council adopted a social host ordinance which imposes a $1,000 fine on property owners who use or allow others to use illegal fireworks on their property. Also, the 4th of July holiday traditionally causes a dramatic spike in service calls to first responders; city officials are urging the community to reserve the use of 9-1-1 calls for true emergencies such as fire, injury or immediate threat to people or property. To ensure a safe holiday, Folsom city officials are offering these tips to follow: *Only purchase "Safe and Sane" fireworks that display the State Fire Marshal's seal. *Store fireworks in a cool, dry place. *Always read the directions and warning labels on fireworks. If a device is not marked with instructions and a warning label, do not light it. *When using legal fireworks, only set them off outdoors in a clear area that is away from homes, dry leaves, grass, and other flammable materials. *Always supervise children around fireworks. *Do not try to relight or handle malfunctioning fireworks. *Always have a bucket of water and/or a fire extinguisher nearby. Know how to operate the fire extinguisher properly. *Fireworks are prohibited in all city-owned properties and parks except at the Lembi Community Park parking lot. The use of fireworks on all trails and open spaces in the City of Folsom is prohibited.
