UC Master Gardeners of Placer County workshops to enhance your gardening skills

Learn new and innovative techniques while improving your basic gardening skills through a series of workshops sponsored by the UC Master Gardeners of Placer County. These workshops cover a variety of topics. You will learn how to grow food sustainably while cultivating your garden to protect California's natural resources. FALL IS THE NEW SPRING (fall garden planting) July 12, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Loomis Library and Community Center, 6050 Library Drive Did you know you need to plant your fall/winter veggies in July and August so they can become established while the weather is still warm? Come and learn more about how to grow your garden in the winter, starting in August. COMPOSTING AND MULCH July 19, 10-11:30 a.m. City of Roseville, Utility Exploration Center, 1501 Pleasant Grove Blvd. Who knew your kitchen scraps and yard debris could improve your soil? It's called composting, which enhances your soil and helps you save water. Learn how to set up a system that works for you. Also, learn about the different types of mulch and how they protect your garden. Reservations required: Workshops – City of Roseville WHAT'S THE BUZZ ABOUT POLLINATORS? Aug. 9, 10:30-11:30 a.m. Loomis Library and Community Center, 6050 Library Drive Discover how to attract and protect our winged visitors. Come and learn about pollinators, why we need them and what they require in our gardens. Bring a ceramic pot saucer and make a puddling dish for your garden. WORM COMPOSTING Aug. 16, 10-11 a.m. City of Roseville Utility Exploration Center 1501 Pleasant Grove Blvd. Discover the fun and benefits of vermiculture, the process of composting with worms. This workshop covers topics such as the value of worm compost, setting up a worm bin, what to feed (and not feed) worms and caring for your worm bin. By the end of the workshop, you will have acquired the knowledge necessary to create your own worm bin and begin composting with worms. This free, informational workshop does not include supplies and does not involve bin building. Reservations required: www.roseville.ca.us/residents/utility_exploration_center/tours_and_workshops/workshops WORM BIN BUILDING Aug. 16, 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. City of Roseville Utility Exploration Center 1501 Pleasant Grove Blvd. After attending the informational workshop on worm composting on Aug. 16, build a worm bin in this hands-on workshop. By the end of the workshop, you will be ready to start worm composting and will leave with a prepared bin. The fee includes all materials necessary to complete a worm bin, including the bin, shredded paper, a spray bottle and composting worms. We recommend attending the free 10 a.m. worm composting workshop to prepare yourself for caring for your worms.
