Nurses from District 3 protest One Big Beautiful Bill

Rep. Kevin Kiley passed President Donald Trump's One Big Beautiful Bill Act on July 3, days after nurses from District 3 protested the Bill Act's Medicaid cuts at Kiley's Rocklin office on Tuesday. The protest was one of nine nationwide hosted by National Nurses United. Other protests occurred in Arizona, Kansas, Ohio, Texas, New York and Maine. The Senate passed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act in a 51-50 as the protest occurred. The bill proposed $880 billion would be removed from Medicaid. California's version of Medicaid, Medi-Cal, serves 14.7 million Californians, 38% of the state's population according to The California Department of Health Care Services. In California's 3rd Congressional District, 174,941 residents have Medi-Cal according to The California Health Care Foundation. District 3 spans most of the California-Nevada border. It includes the Plumas, Sierra, Nevada, Placer, Alpine, Mono, and Inyo, and parts of Yuba, El Dorado, and Sacramento counties. Holly Warren, a resident nurse in the Labor and Delivery department at Kaiser Roseville and resident of Folsom, shared she wants Kiley to vote no when the bill comes to his desk. "I'm here today because I am demanding that Kevin Kiley vote no when this bill comes back to Congress. I want Kevin Kiley to stand up and stand strong for his constituents and for the American people," Warren explained. "We want him to put healthcare first, not billionaires. We want a healthy America, not an America that is sicker and dying." As a labor and delivery nurse for 24 years, she doesn't want to see the rate of infant and maternal mortality rate rise. "We need to come together and provide health care for our pregnant patients and their newborns," Warren said. " We want a healthier nation, not a sicker one. That's why we want Kevin Kiley to vote no on this bill full of devastating cuts to healthcare." The Placer Herald reached out to Kiley's office for a statement but was told his office cannot get ahold of him while they are voting on the bill. In April 2024, Kiley posted on X about a different protest with themes of "Save Medicaid." He posted that he was with the protesters, but that they were protesting at the wrong place. He posted "Take the signs to Gavin Newsom's office. Tell him to stop driving Medicaid into bankruptcy with benefits for illegal immigrants Newsom already asked the Legislature for a bailout and took out an 'emergency loan' because the cost of comprehensive Medi-Cal coverage for those here illegally has ballooned to $9.5 billion for just this year. This is simply unsustainable. It threatens coverage for California's legal residents, who are already seeing their access to care limited." He stated in his post that "California is the only state in the country with this irresponsible policy. Please tell Newsom to reverse it immediately." Kiley voted to pass the bill on July 3, stating his main reasoning was Californians will get a major tax relief from it. "Californians will soon get something long overdue: major tax relief. That is the most immediate consequence of passing today's legislation, which will benefit all Americans but especially Californians, because of an increase in the SALT deduction. Had the bill failed, Californians would have faced the largest tax increase in U.S. history, costing the average family thousands of dollars," he explained. "I was committed to making sure that didn't happen." "The bill also provides crucial support for education, national defense, and border security. And it protects our public lands and rural hospitals - both of which I advocated for throughout the legislative process," Kiley shared. The bill passed with a 218-214 vote.
