Day 1 of epic Folsom tradition: Folsom Pro Rodeo kicks off tonight

It is Day 1 of a three-day, epic tradition in Folsom: The Folsom Pro Rodeo kicks off Thursday night, bringing over 60 years of rodeo tradition. Tens of thousands of people attend the event over the course of its three-day run, offering a huge range of entertainment and a nod to the region's rich western heritage. This year, the weather is forecasted to be much more mild compared to previous years, with highs expected in the mid-80's. The Folsom Pro Rodeo is sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association (PRCA), meaning it prioritizes maintaining the highest standards of livestock care and safety, according to the event website. Popular events at the rodeo include bull riding, barrel racing and roping, to name just a few. There will also be live music, a wide range of food options to purchase and a vibrant fireworks show at the end of each evening. There is also a "fan zone" which includes a live DJ, line dancing, ponies, prizes and giveaways. As is the case every year, the stadium and surrounding area is expected to be jam packed fans. Folsom Police Commander Andrew Bates said the community should be aware of the crowds this event will bring, and plan accordingly. "We're anticipating significant traffic congestion in the area, as is typical during the Rodeo each year," said Bates. "We encourage attendees to arrive early to allow plenty of time for parking and walking to the venue. We're also asking all drivers to exercise extra caution, particularly after dark, as there will be a noticeable increase in pedestrian traffic. For those not attending the Rodeo, it may be best to avoid the area, especially during peak times just before the event starts and as it concludes." Folsom Pro Rodeo officials said there is plenty of parking around the Dan Russell Rodeo Arena which is located at the rear of the Folsom Lions City Park. Parking onsite is $20; there is also parking available near the arena in local neighborhoods, though rodeo fans are being reminded ot please respect homeowners and don't block driveways. Doors open each night at 5 pm and the show begins at 7:30 pm.
