50 years ago Population 3,179 (U.S. census 1960 and 1970) Pay raise: Interpace Corporation (Gladding McBean) has announced the successful completion of labor contract negotiations at the local plant with the Lincoln Industrial Council. The agreement provides for improvements to the wages and benefits over a three-year term. The contract calls for a .35 cent an hour pay raise to all hourly employees this year and .32 cents an hour starting July 1, 1976. The contract may be reopened for wage negotiations only on July 1, 1977. The present basic wage at the local plant is $4.13 an hour. The highest hourly category is $4.93 an hour. Upgraded pension benefits, pay for jury duty, improved health and welfare benefits, and some adjustments in grade levels also are included in the new contract. Negotiations have been underway for about three weeks, with the final session continuing until past 2 o'clock in the morning of July 1. The majority of members of the two unions which form the Lincoln Industrial Council voted to accept the final company offer on July 1, according to Al Swan, business representative for the Operating Engineers Local Union No. 3. Swan and Clem Hoover represented the Operating Engineers in the negotiations; Reggie Lechuga for the Chauffeurs, Teamsters and Helpers Local No. 150; Gene Watts, Jack Griggs, Jack Bishop and Richard Chamberlain for Interpace. Company officials said there has been a recent improvement in business at the local plant which has required a recall of some of the workforce. About 40 percent of the workers were laid off earlier this year due to the slowdown in the building industry. 75 years ago Population 2,410 (U.S. Census 1940 and 1950) City Council: In view of alarming war clouds, the city council voted in their regular meeting last Tuesday night to proceed at full steam in quest of pipe to renovate the town's present water transmission system. Rather than waiting until the next regular meeting, the water committee and city engineer Reitter were given the okay to go ahead and determine the needs for our water lines and then call for bids without having to wait for an official approval by the council. Mayor Hughes said that he had been informed by reliable sources within the past few days that it is extremely doubtful whether the city will be able to obtain the needed pipe line. Also, in line with the possibility of war was the decision by the council to have the city mobile generator unit mounted on a trailer. City engineer Reitter and the equipment committee were placed in charge of the project. City Clerk: The city clerk staff should be all set to have worry-free office problems from now on. At least as far as multiplication, subtraction and other complications of the arithmetic world go. The city has ordered a semi-automatic calculator and an adding machine for use in the clerk's office. Draft board: The Placer County draft board opened its doors officially last Tuesday in the City Hall at Auburn, according to John G. Walsh, chairman of the county selective service board. The first meeting of the board was held last night and Mr. Walsh expects to receive word at any time to begin calling up men for pre-induction physicals. He said that no quota has been set but that within the next ten days, in all probability, some headway will have been made and the quota will be announced. The first registrants will be all 18-year-old males. While all 18-year-old males are required to register, the present ages for induction are from 19 through 25. Registrants who have reached their 26th birthday are not subject to induction under the existing Act. No change has yet been made in Selective Service regulations that would alter the status of registrants qualifying for deferred classification. Deferred classification includes qualified veterans, Armed Force reservists, qualified married men and fathers, those considered essential in civilian occupations or agricultural pursuits, certain students and those physically, mentally or mortally disqualified. Registrants are required by law to keep local boards informed of any change of residential address. Changes of status and address must be in writing and signed by the registrant when reporting to his local board. 100 years ago Population 1,324 (U.S. Census 1900, 1910, and 1920) Newspaper: Imagine, if you can, a community like Lincoln without a newspaper. That is a big task for your imagination, to be sure, for every county and practically every small town in America has a local paper. But let us see how much we would miss the world if by some trick of fate the water was to run dry. First, we would have no way of keeping informed on what is taking place in the community. Old friends might die, others leave town, others met with good fortune, but we would have to wait until the news finally passed from word of mouth. Second, we would have no medium for putting over plans looking towards a better town in which to live. We want to call a meeting of the citizens of the community to consider some matter of vital importance, but it would be difficult to get information broadcast. We might want to hold a fair, or community exhibition of some kind, we might even want to get a turnout for an entertainment, but what success would we have if there were no local paper through which to tell the public about it? Or suppose you wanted to conduct an auction sale, dispose of some surplus or merchandise in your store, or inform the public about a new service you offer. Would you find it so easy without a local newspaper? Without a local newspaper, Lincoln and every other small city would become a community divided against itself. Refrigeration: Electricity and the telephone have been the two greatest labor savers and conveniences ever given to mankind. But now comes the electric refrigerator for the small home and farm. It promises to be the savior of mankind from many ills and losses, with which he has been afflicted because of food either spoiled or improperly cared for previous to eating. The electric refrigerator adds the final touch to modern housekeeping which makes food storage practical and safe, and as satisfactory as the gas or electric range. Electric refrigeration will revolutionize the question of food and produce storage on the farm. Fruit: Placer County last week shipped 189 cars of deciduous fruit to eastern markets, despite the fact there were only five shipping days, and efforts were made to keep the output low to avoid glutting the market. Newcastle, with ninety-one cars, was in the lead among the shipping centers. The Pacific Fruit Express is making arrangements to ship about 275 or 300 cars from Placer County this week. Estimated outputs are: Newcastle, 140; Loomis, 90; Auburn and Penryn, 30 each; Lincoln, 10. Recipes: Orange Ice Cream: Strain two and one-half cupfuls of orange juice; add one cupful of sugar and, slowly, one cupful each of milk and cream. Freeze as usual. Mold, if desired, in individual molds and garnish with candied orange peel. Come-Agains: Sift two cupfuls of flour with one-half teaspoonful of salt, two teaspoonfuls of baking powder. Add one cupful of chopped raisins and pecans, mixed in equal parts, and one cupful of brown sugar. Beat one egg very light, add one-half cupful of milk and stir this into the dry ingredients.
