1949: No fireworks in state, but Junior's cap gun is OK

25 years ago Aug. 24, 2000 A Prayer Service was held for Placer County native Frances C. Mangiaracina, age 90. During WWII, she served with the WAVES and then worked s a legal stenographer for the Department of Corrections for 41 years. Kevin Hill, a Del Oro High School graduate, accepted a $500 scholarship from Henry Schneider of the Loomis Basin Chamber of Commerce. The Sierra College Music Department will host the Russion-American Music Academy in a production of an historic Russian opera "The Tsar's Bride" by Nicolai Rimsky-Korsakov. A stellar cast will include Richard Frantzreb, bass-baritone of Roseville. Andrew Ryder, who died in 1920, was a local man who lived on King Road between Arcadia Ave. and Francis Dr. His home burned in the 1980s. Andrew built the Bank of Loomis, the first bank building in town. 4-H members Mark and Paul Doerner raised Broad Breasted white turkeys for a special 4-H project. Ready to greet students at the new H. Clarke Powers School on Humphrey Road in Loomis included Debbie Wickmire and Jill Combs. Also preparing for students were teachers Peggy Stare and Debbie Newton along with aide Nadine Hintzman. Joan Edwards of Newcastle was the new president of the Sierra College Patrons Club. Serving with her as vice presidents were Susie Harms of Granite Bay and Edna Goldenberg of Rocklin. Pat Bryant of Rocklin would serve as corresponding secretary and Barbara Vineyard as treasurer. The Patrons Club raised funds to benefit the arts-related programs for the college. 50 years ago Aug. 21, 1975 Funeral services were planned for Mrs. Mae G. Mehl, 79, a native of Loomis. She lived on the Fieser Ranch with her husband Irwin where she was born. Mae was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star of Penryn, where she received her 50-year membership pin. The Del Oro Golden Eagle Band was off to band camp at Pollock Pines for an intensive week of music and marching. Assisting Director Ron Jones included Laura Du Priest, Jill Roberts and Mark Takahashi. Yesteryear by Vivian Rasmussen: The local fruit houses in due time had their own names and labels registered. The ranchers began to ship their fruit under the brand of the fruit house of their choice. The Loomis Fruit Growers Association was incorporated on April 29, 1901. They shipped their first fruit through the California Fruit Exchange until 1928. The first building was located where the current Wells Fargo Bank and Ace Hardware are. The building was still there in 1915 but probably moved shortly thereafter to its present site south of town, where the High Hand business is today. Ed Wells was the president of the Del Oro Parents Club, and Mrs. Kenneth Queener was the publicity chairman for the group. Julie and Sheryl Fullerton would be sad to see their exchange student head home. Ritsuoko Murata, 12, was returning to Japan after visiting Loomis for a month. Asked what she liked about her stay in the U.S. she replied, "Very good food. American people are very kind." Two other girls from Japan were also here as part of the 1975 California-Japan youth exchange program. Rimi Watanabe was staying with the Donalson family. Mrs. Donalson said, "She's just like any giggling 12-year-old, and she really likes chocolate cake." The house guest of Art and Joy Reed was Sachiko Seguchi, who said, "USA is a very big country and very wonderful. I am not homesick because we have plums and many families." 75 years ago June 1949 Funeral services were held for Mrs. Nancy E. Anderson, 82, a native of Missouri and a resident of Rocklin for the past 15 years. It appeared Placer County fruitmen would receive good prices for their Beauty and Santa Rosa plums on the Eastern market. Most of the Santa Rosa crop will be moved by express instead of by freight and very little going into storage as in past years. The State of California did not allow firecrackers and all forms of fireworks for individuals. Cap pistols were permissible so Junior would have a chance to make plenty of noise. Ed Horton killed a rattlesnake on his property. The young snake had only one button. Young frauleins in Germany had never seen honest-to-goodness soap. Bob Hope, who saw their plight when he was abroad last year, urged support of the CARE soap drive. The result was successful with young children able to work up a lather with their first cakes of soap. For Sale: 4 1/2 acres with a new Basolite home and a live creek, $5,500. The Placer County 4-H Club Fair was a huge success. Local club members earning awards included Hannah Takahashi (Garden); Dorothy Betts, Hazel Beaver, Willeen Beaver, Ruth Hodgeland and Naomi Takahashi (Sewing); Clay Carter, Joann Nute and Pat Flannigan (Dairy Cattle); Joanne Wickman, Sally Childress and Viola Hodgeland (Food Preservation); George Coughran, Ray Rasmussen and Robert Rasmussen (Swine); and Paul Wetmore (Chickens). Standing Guard - oral histories: Lila Hanamoto Sasaki had been interned at Tule Lake in 1942, then Jerome, Arkansas, and finally the Amache camp in eastern Colorado. Her father entrusted their farm and home to a fine man, Gene Fowler, during the war. Gene made sure the farm, home and property were in good hands while the family was gone. So many others were not so lucky.
