Beat the heat: MOSAC offers cool science fun for foothill families

When Sacramento's summer temperatures soar past 100 degrees, we foothill-area parents know the drill: Find somewhere air-conditioned where the kids can burn energy without melting. As a mom of four kids ranging from 4 to 14 years old, I can confidently say the SMUD Museum of Science and Curiosity has become our go-to summer escape where we can dive into hands-on science adventures that captivate every single one of my children. MOSAC truly delivers on its promise to spark curiosity across all ages with interactive exhibits exploring science, technology, engineering, arts and math. My kids have explored all seven main exhibit areas — Health Connections, Nature Detectives, Powering Change, Water Challenge, Destination Space, Design Lab and the UC Davis Multiverse Theater — and each child finds something that captures their imagination. The Water Challenge exhibit proves especially popular with my younger ones, featuring flowing rivers and hands-on activities that let them play while learning about California's water cycle. Meanwhile, my teenagers gravitate toward the Design Lab and space exhibits. The Nature Detectives gallery brings the outdoors inside with live creatures, including a working beehive that fascinates all four of my kids regardless of age. Located at 400 Jibboom St. near downtown Sacramento, MOSAC operates seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Military families receive a special perk: Active military personnel and their families can visit free from May 17 through Sept. 1 as part of the Blue Star Museum program. Just present a military ID at the front desk. The museum also offers discounts for educators, college students, youth ages 2-17 and seniors. Don't miss the UC Davis Multiverse Theater, where 20- to 30-minute astronomy shows transport audiences through space and time, but reserve seats at the front desk or online since capacity is limited.
