1975: Basque in Auburn, ribs in Rocklin, chicken teriyaki at Buddhist Church

25 years ago Sept. 21, 2000 Funeral services were held for Koshima Nodohara, 99, a native of Hiroshima, Japan, and a resident of Lincoln and Placer County for the past 78 years. She was a homemaker and fruit rancher. A past member of the Fruit Exchange in Loomis, Koshima was active in the Placer Buddhist Church. Pam Dumler, and instructional aide, was honored as "Employee of the Year" for the Loomis Union School District. In nominating Pam, teacher Jan Brown said, "She helped children learn and become better citizens, offering them support, encouragement and praise." Troop 12 of Loomis found out that washing dishes was part of the service work during Boy Scout summer camp. Scouts doing the scrubbing included Brandon Garcia, Keith Anderson, Nick Palma, JP Newsom, Josh Olmstead, Micah Nolen and guest scout Michael Gazzolo of Rocklin's Troop 349. Takyuki Zoshi will demonstrate the sculpting of his award-winning Buddahs during the 36th annual Autumn Festival and food Bazaar at the Placer Buddhist Church. He was part of the 1981 "Peace Walk" in which participants walked from Los Angeles to New York to protest nuclear missiles. Zoshi said during the walk he contemplated the existence of nuclear weapons used for violence and destruction of human beings. Gregg Florance and Art Hawkins of Loomis were restoring a 1954 Ford "Woody" station wagon that had been in the family for some 30 years. Barbara Nichols of the Loomis Basin Historical Society reported on a prominent citizen in the early history of Loomis, Andrew Ryder. He bought his acreage in 1883 when the town was known as Pino. His home faced the wagon road that was later named King Road. In 1909, Andrew prepared 25 acres to plant eucalyptus trees, the variety of which furniture was made and which made a veneering equal to that of mahogany. All that was left of that grove were six trees on Humphrey Road. 50 years ago Sept. 18, 1975 A Mass was held for Jennie Catinari, 73, a native of Lucca, Italy, and a resident of Penryn for the past 51 years. She was a member of the Sons of Italy. Encroachment from Rocklin was a key issue in the discussion of the incorporation of Loomis. Joe Ferreira, a supporter of incorporation, said Rocklin could destroy this community without annexing by massive development at the Loomis borders. "Self-rule," he said, "was the main goal of incorporation." For the first time, Del Oro High School girls would be members of the CIF (California Interscholastic Federation). They will compete in the Sierra Foothill League. Most Del Oro students asked Raeuf Magdiche, "Where is Tunisia?" The foreign exchange student explained, "It's in the northern part of Africa." Raeuf added, "I like the people here, I have made many friends already." Mr. Ron Davis was a first-year teacher at Del Oro. He would be working with Mr. Pchelkin in the FFA program. Local FFA members earning awards in showmanship with their sheep were Jan Freitas, Sandy Rathbone, Chris Trapp and Karen Pellerin. Swine: Daniel John, Vincent Ross, Robin Hauck and Steve Hurliman. Also, Sy and Loran's Porky's Pit in Rocklin offered Bar-B-Q Ribs. Sharon Sugiyama helped advertise the 11th annual Chicken Teriyaki Barbecue Festival at the Placer Buddhist Church. General Chairman Herb Tokutomi said, "The decorative art of sushi making would be a featured attraction for the event. Sushi, a part of Japanese food as apple pie was to America, was prepared rice in many styles, shapes and flavors. 75 years ago July 8, 1949 Many local friends regretted the news that Mrs. Daude Decker passed away. She had been a highly esteemed resident of Loomis for many years as a music teacher and an active member of the Womans Club. Mrs. Decker was a sister of the late Pearl Blemer, one-time Judge of Loomis. Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Rasmussen will serve homemade ice cream for members of the Loomis Grange. The Rocklin Roller Rink will host three exhibition roller hockey games. The local team was composed of Rocklin and Roseville players. Caesar Lewis of Roseville took over management of the roller rink. "Tulsa," starring Susan Hayward and Robert Preston, was playing in theaters. The birthstone for July is the ruby. In ancient India, the ruby was believed to ensure perfect safety, even in battle. The favorite gem of Renaissance nobility was the ruby. Two sons of Mr. and Mrs. Marble of Loomis earned college degrees. Robert graduated from UC Berkeley and Joseph from the University of Michigan. Mr. and Mrs. Ole Porter were honored by friends and relatives on their 25th wedding anniversary. William Bethell of Penryn was elected as president of the Board of Trustees of the Placer Union High School District. The board voted to eliminate all outside organizations from the use of the old gymnasium building. The action would close the roller skating rink and meant the Boy Scouts and National Guard would no longer meet there. Standing Guard - oral histories: Ida Nishigushi Otani was a pre-med student in college when Pearl Harbor was bombed. In February 1942, her father was abruptly fired from the Western Pacific Railroad in Gerlach, Nevada. The family was given 24 hours to vacate the railroad property. Ida's parents and 6-year-old sister ended up out in the desert in a very small trailer. Most of the people they thought were friends in Gerlach deserted them. But one, an ex-Army nurse, gave the family generous and courageous assistance. (continued)
