Yolo Basin Foundation offers bat tours at wildlife area

The Yolo Basin Foundation will host a special daytime Bat Talk and Tour event designed specifically for young children and families with kids too young to stay up for evening bat viewing. This fun-filled event, through Sept. 26 at the Yolo Bypass Wildlife Area Headquarters will feature opportunities to meet live bats up close, plus arts and crafts, games and other bat-related activities tailored for younger participants. The program offers families a chance to learn about the largest urban colony of Mexican Free-tailed bats in California, which live under the nearby Yolo Causeway during summer months. Regular evening Bat Talk and Tour events with tickets available for August and September offer the full experience for those seeking to witness the spectacular "flyout" as thousands of bats emerge in ribbons at sunset to hunt for insects. Pricing is $17 for adults, $5 for youth ages 6-17 and free for children under 5. Registration is required, and the program accommodates visitors with special needs.
