Woodcreek excited for new offense

One would think with a new coach installing a new offense it would take a while for the players to not only learn it, but be able to execute it with a certain amount of proficiency. That's not necessarily true, or at least it wasn't for Woodcreek's football team. In their first time playing against other teams in a passing camp held at Cal Poly in June, Woodcreek placed second out of about 20 teams, losing only to Pacifica in the championship round. Pacifica made it to the state championship round last season before losing to Grant in the state 2-AA championship game. "I always try to get away and make it more than just about football," Woodcreek coach Kyle Stowers said of the trip. "There are lot of cool things down there at Cal Poly where we could work on culture and team bonding, plus I knew the camp would be a challenge. I didn't know how we'd do, but we won our pool and ended up placing second, losing to Pacifica. We ran out of gas. "I knew we worked hard all spring, but going out there for the first time, you don't know what you have. I was super happy with how we competed. It's a testament to the boys and how hard they worked." The team obviously picked up the offense quickly, and they like it. "It's been going pretty smoothly," said Woodcreek senior quarterback Josiah Melendez of the new passing offense the team turned to over the flexbone/veer. "We've been studying it since January. We've got a good grasp on it." Added junior tight end/middle linebacker Roman Pereyda, "I think the offense has been a good change. It's more responsibility on us, but the depth of the plays we get to run and the level of football is at a higher level. I feel it opens up new doors for us because we have the athletes who can play in this offense."
