Placer Women Democrats collect donations, supplies for students, schools

In the first of a series of community projects, the Placer Women Democrats, the oldest Democrat club in the county, has begun a school supply drive. seeMYchild, a Rocklin-based nonprofit, is a key early partner. Other like-minded groups are engaged in the effort. The partnership goal is to help support people in Placer County who may be vulnerable or struggling. "We rise by uplifting others," says Zoe Kanan, PWD president. The drive began in early July with the intention to help elementary school pupils. To date, the partners have raised enough funds to help 50 students, to be identified by seeMYchild and other groups, and students at George Cirby Elementary School, Roseville. Cirby is the first of four schools on their target list, and the team will add schools as donations flow in. PWD used California Dash Board, a CA Education Department database, to identify schools with significant needs. "There are people who live among us who are invisible to most of us, though they make all of our lives better," Vice President Joyce Henry says. "They handle our groceries, care for our children, manicure our lawns, etc. So many people work full time and cannot afford rent. We just want to let them know that we see them and want to help."
