Folsom Lake College baseball coach arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence

Longtime Folsom Lake College baseball coach Richard Gregory was arrested last week on suspicion of felony domestic violence after briefly barricading himself in a home in Roseville. Now, Gregory is on paid administrative leave from the school. As first reported in the Roseville Press Tribune on Aug. 14, Roseville Police responded to a disturbance call at a home in the 1400 block of Orwell Drive. Police said the disturbance was a fight between a man and woman over a breakup; there was reportedly a physical altercation but no major injuries reported. When police arrived, the man briefly barricaded himself inside a bedroom in the home while the woman was able to leave safely. After a short amount of negotiations, police convinced Gregory to leave the home peacefully, according to a statement from Roseville Police. Gregory was arrested on suspicion of felony domestic violence and obstruction; he was booked into Placer County Jail and released Aug. 15. Kristy Hart, public information officer for Folsom Lake College, said Gregory is a professor of kinesiology, health and athletics. After gathering facts on the case, Hart confirmed school officials opted to put Gregory on paid administrative leave. "Right now our focus is taking all the necessary steps to just make sure that all of our students and student athletes have a seamless start to the academic year, which starts for us this Saturday," said Hart. According to the Folsom Lake College website, Gregory played baseball at West Valley College and then San Jose City College, where he earned an All-America honor as an outfielder. Gregory went on to play at Chico State and was named West Region Player of the Year in 1998. Gregory went on to a professional career with the Atlanta Braves and one year of independent league baseball. In 2011, he was elected to the Chico State Athletic Hall of Fame. Gregory began his coaching career at San Jose City College as the outfield and hitting coach; he then became the outfield and hitting coach at Chico State. Following the 2003 season, Gregory took time away from the game to focus on family before resuming coaching at Vista del Lago High School in 2009. He became head coach at Folsom Lake College in the inaugural 2015 season. He has three children. Harris said FLC is in the process of finding an interim head coach and hoped to have the person in place by the end of the week.
