Woodcreek plays well versus Twelve Bridges

Woodcreek High's varsity football team found a good opponent to scrimmage as the team prepares to open the season against Jesuit. On Friday night the Timberwolves traveled to Lincoln to face Twelve Bridges, who figures to be one of the better teams once again in the Sac-Joaquin Section. By all accounts, it turned out to be a good scrimmage for the Timberwolves. "It went great," Woodcreek head football coach Kyle Stowers said. "First and foremost, it's important to get out of these scrimmages healthy and except for one kid who tweaked his ankle, we did. Secondly, we had officials there and the scrimmage was run like a game, so it was good to have that game-like experience. It was a good experience for us. And, we got better from this scrimmage, so everything went well." On the field, Stowers said one of the most important things to the success of the team this year would be the play of the offensive line. He likes what he saw from the group. "I was really looking to see how we'd play up front," Stowers said. "We've got some skill guys and we can run around and we've got two quarterbacks who can throw it, but none of that matter if you're line doesn't block. I liked the physicality we showed up front. I'm really happy with how we ran the ball." Stowers also liked the play of his quarterback, Joey Melendez and receiver, Trace Murchison. "Josiah made a nice play when he ran about 45 yards on a quarterback keeper," Stowers said. "I know Joey can do that and I expect those kinds of plays from him. Trace took a five-yard hitch and turned it into a touchdown. Those two scores were nice. We're looking for improvement. I'm happy with how we competed." If there was a negative, Stowers said the team needs to tackle better, but overall, he was pleased with the scrimmage. Now the team is all about preparing for its first game on Friday night at home against Jesuit. "We're excited to take on Jesuit," Stowers said. "They've got a great program and they're well-coached. Marlin Blanton and his split-back veer is a staple and he's evolved well into throwing the ball so we're looking forward to the challenge."
