UC program prepares young adults for parks careers through hands-on training

A new workforce development initiative is connecting young adults with career opportunities in California's parks system through hands-on field experience. The University of California Agriculture and Natural Resources received funding from Parks California's Career Pathways grant program to launch its Environmental Stewards Program, which builds upon existing UC naturalist training to create a pipeline for future park professionals in the Sacramento region. The initiative pairs participants from the Sacramento Regional Conservation Corps with experienced professionals during an intensive two-month training program. Corps members gain practical experience working throughout the American River corridor, from Folsom Lake downstream to its confluence with the Sacramento River, while collaborating with staff from California State Parks and the Effie Yeaw Nature Center at Ancil Hoffman Park. Program graduate Six Willis expressed enthusiasm for the career path, stating his goal to work anywhere within the state park system and eventually become a park ranger. Participants develop professional skills through capstone projects that merge personal interests with environmental stewardship knowledge, preparing them for roles in visitor education, land management planning and conservation work.
