Placerville toy store scoops up ice cream business from closing Rite Aid

When Tony Windle heard Placerville's Rite Aid was closing, he saw an opportunity to serve his community and expand his business. The owner of T.W. Bonkers Toy & Candy Emporium at 398 Main St. purchased the pharmacy's 24 dipping freezers and struck a deal with Thrifty Ice Cream to bring the beloved brand to his store after the drugstore's closure. Windle, who had been selling ice cream for five years with brands like Gunther's and Dreyer's, wanted to preserve the ice cream history Thrifty built over decades. He worked with Vicki, a 30-year Rite Aid employee, to maintain continuity for loyal ice cream customers. After waiting for Rite Aid to close, Windle hired a moving crew to transport the freezers and equipment to Bonkers, complete with the signature cylindrical scoops Thrifty is famous for. The store has sold more ice cream in 2.5 weeks than it previously sold in two months. Customers can now enjoy classic Thrifty flavors like Chocolate Malted Crunch and black cherry at affordable prices – $3 per scoop, only 10 cents more than Rite Aid's price and significantly less than the $4.50 charged elsewhere. Vicki continues to train Bonkers staff on proper scooping techniques, ensuring the authentic Thrifty experience continues. Windle plans to bring back "80s Night" this fall, offering the first scoop for 35 cents – the 1986 price. The toy store, which offers games, puzzles, crafts and educational toys, will celebrate its 10th anniversary in 2026. Windle also serves on committees for Placerville's annual Trick or Treat on Main Street event, which drew 4,000 people last year.
